Wylie - is a NIGHTMARE ON ELMSTREET X A BILLION. Horrible. It's because when we used to take him to the groomer (a few times when he was 9mths-16mths), they cut his quick - and he has been terrorized ever since. After we realized this was happening - NO more groomer, ever.

So, we had to wrap him tight in a towel - with one paw out, me holding him with every bit of strength - and Tony would clip. I mean, practically impossible. It was like holding a 2-ton gorilla. Eventually, we graduated to me holding w/out the towel - which is what we do now. But still, he struggles, pants, and freaks out as if we're going to chop off his very arm - it's just awful. I try to tell him "NO" when he struggles and "good" when he manages to stay calm.

I so feel your pain.
Oh for heavens sake girl...you really DO go through what I do! Geez, it will make you crazy, I swear!! I am DEFINITELY going to be trying this towel technique...say a prayer for me! I hope I don't smother the little guy, LOL! I can just picture him wrapped up like a bean burrito with his head and only one paw sticking out....LOL. Cracks me up just thinking about it! He is really going to think we've lost our minds now Oh well, if it works, it works! I'll let you know how it goes whenever we try it! Thanks a ton girl!

Yes That's what we have to do with Stedman....just eventually give up because my goodess, the fight can't go on forever One day we spent almost a half an hour trying to get him to cooperate and finally we HAD to stop as he was just soooo out of breath from fighting us My hubby said NO MORE as his breathing was getting so bad We just can't do that to him. So anyway, I'm just glad to hear that you feel my pain.....lol

Oh definitely. With Yorkies having black nails it doesn't make the job any easier Very scary when you can't see where the quick is

We are just starting to groom our girls at home, but we aren't including nail clipping right now! We take them to our vet for clippings! We LOVE our vet and have known him for 20 years.
It takes 3-4 to hold her down too, it's insane!!
Wrigley, calm as can be about it!
Can't wait to see how Camden is!
Oh geez, I can't even imagine! My Cocker Spaniel that has since passed on weighed 52 lbs (she was very overweight! ) was always bad about having her nails trimmed too....but NOTHING like Stedman. I don't know what on earth I would have done if I had to fight her like I do him as she weighed so much more. She would always stuck her paw up under her when we went to clip them, but I eventually got the job done. Stedman is (so far) just impossible

She would scream (and I mean scream) like she was being killed, and I wasn't even touching her!!!! With the dremmel, she doesn't squirm like the did with the clippers and she doesn't scream at all. I am able to get all the nails done in less than 5 minutes.
Jodie, you have given me new hope....LOL. Thank you so much! I am SO ordering one of the Pedicures! I AM going to try the towel technique that a few people have mentioned though, because they REALLY do need clipping in the meantime. They are just getting too darn long and I can't stand it anymore...and I'm sure he can't either!

Poor Sissy...I can just picture her howling I actually can't believe that Stedman doesn't do that, it's surprising! He whines really bad though, and pants pants pants like he has just run a marathon Geez....these babies, I tell you!

the nails are softer after a bath also - sometimes it's good to do them after a bath cause they're already so traumatized they just give up
LOL I loved the last part girl...and you know, that really does make alot of sense. Stedman hates his bath too, and he does get traumatized during it (as he does with EVERYTHING) so after the bath might be the perfect time to do it. I'm FOR SURE going to try the towel thing....several people have mentioned that and it sounds like it just might work Maybe he won't be able to squirm around so dang easy Thanks for all your help V!

They never cut much off though, b/c they're afraid of getting the quick, but anything is better than what they are now! And Madison's are the same way....I was going to attempt to do his, but just haven't wanted to deal with it yet. Besides, the cats 'hid' the nail clipper.
LOL...your cats hid the nail clippers??? That is too funny girl!! Sounds like something my Brinkley would do He is always jumping up on the island in the kitchen or up on the kitchen counters and knocking things off. There has been more than one occasion where he has had a Yorkie Yummy feast in the middle of the night too Yes, my cat likes Yorkie Yummies He is a little "off" He has been known to steals things and hide them....I tell you, cats are such characters!!

But no girl...don't feel bad. Just from reading the posts in this thread it sounds like we aren't the only ones who have babies running around with their nails a little longer than they should be But hey, at least we are seeking help LOL!!! Hug the boys for me!!

Well, that's probably exaggerating a bit, but she definitely knows how to manipulate me.

Here's how spoiled she is. She has her own little "bed" right behind my desk (I work from home). So she can sit right by the window behind me and I can just swivel in my chair to pet her. Sometimes that isn't good enough for her and she barks or growls at me when she wants to get in my lap. If she were a child I wouldn't put up with it. Good thing I don't have kids! She knows just how to manipulate me and it works! LOL

Keon (& Lola)
LOL!!! I love the part that I highlighted in red...so funny and SO TRUE!! These dogs get away with more than most kids would I think It's quite sad actually Your Lola sounds just as spoiled rotten as my two munchkins

I'll hold him up close to me really tight, and hold whatever leg is getting done out. I'll constintly praise him while he's getting them done, telling him "it's o.k" and "goodboy", etc. I don't know if my calming voice is what does the trick, but it does help. I don't know if that would completly solve the issue with little Stedman, but try it out it might help just a little bit. Also, try letting him sniff the clippers, or whatever you are using so he isn't afraid of the device. Maybe just do a couple each night, and after each session give him his favorite treat, or take him for a walk.
Oh girl I SO WISH this worked But I have tried exactly what you said soooo many times....and he STILL acts like a little nut when I try to clip his nails He is just such a BABY...I cannot describe him. LOL. He will see a 100 lb dog in the street and stand up to him and act like he is a little Pitt Bull that is going to rip the 100 lb dogs head off - but he throws a little HISSY FIT when he sees the clippers or hears the bath water running Omg, he is just so pathetic about the silliest, simplest little things!

I can honestly say, he is more scared of a BRUSH than a dog that is 10 X's his size

I get Tessa really, really tired first. Then she lays in my lap on her back and sleeps while I rub her belly. When she is asleep, I cut her nails with the nail clippers Works like a charm and she doesn't even wake up! I play with her feet every time she is on my lap though, petting them and rubbing them, and I think this has helped.

None of my pack likes having the nails clipped and it does take 2 of us to do it.

Someone suggested to me to try and put peanut butter on the counter and let them lap it up and while they are lapping it up, clip the nails.

I also heard that you can try to blind fold them and trim the nails.

Best of luck to you girl, I sure hope you find a solution and soon!
OMG blind folding the Stud-Man, LOL!! I'm sorry but just the thought of it made me laugh out loud! I know your totally serious here and it definitely might work lol, but I can just see Stedman in my head with a blind fold on...LOL! He would be like - Ok....WHAT...THE H#LL.... LOL!!!

Alright, so I am going to wrap him up like a bean burrito and blind fold him while he laps up Peanut Butter off the counter He is going to look like a chinese mummy with a Peanut Butter fetish!!!

And hubby is going to send ME to the funny farm

Gosh I WISH it were that easy with Stedman I even gave him a nerve calming pill (it's FOR DOGS lol) the other night in hopes that it would help him to relax. But did it? HECK NO. He was still going full force like he was on SPEED Hubby said that we need to just knock him out for about 5 minutes or so....LOL. He is my little WILD CHILD!
