Default How to handle grooming a wild pup!!

Sawyer is not crazy about grooming; but he never fights me, and is fairly cooperative; but Darby is another story. He is 15 weeks old, and jumps from the grooming table to my arms no matter what I try. I am afraid to use the loop on him for fear he will break his little neck trying to get away. He has a lot of coat (Biewer) and needs to be kept tangle free, or I will run into big problems. He is a little love, and very affecionate; but the terier in him says forget it to grooming. Any ideas?

We are going to start grooming our two at home and I know from our groomers that Crosley is a pain to groom!
I don't know if it works, but we bought some Comfort Zone spray that is supposed to help keep them calm. It comes in a plug in as well, but we bought the spray so we can use it for the car too. Crosley doesn't travel well either!
I hope it works, it's not cheap! It's like $26.

I would start off lightly with him.. say on your lap. With a light misting of detangler ( never brush a dry coat) and praise him during the whole process. At the very end of your session ( make them short to start) but frequent. Place him onto the grooming table ending the grooming session with one more light brushing ( praise and reward)
He will get the hang of it

Best Wishes
Jan

You will be able to do it, just takes longer time and patience. I have been grooming mine for some time. He is 2 in June and he still doesn't stay still for me for grooming. He only stays still for 2-3 minutes at a time. After that it is "carry me" time. So I groom him 2-3 minutes, carry him for another 30 seconds and then back to grooming lol talk about being spoilt! I just allocate more time to groom him once every 3 weeks but at least I know I am giving him first class treatment and I don't have to leave him with a groomer and getting worried if they treat him well.

Thanks for the input. If I had to shave him bald, I would keep trying . I never want to put my babies safety in someone elses hands for the sake of conveinence. He is a little stinker; but he means the world to me. I will just have to be patient awhile longer, he will get used to it.

Take a prozac...jeeze I had that problem when I first started my grooming of Lulu and Zoey. OMG the only thing I can recommend is having someone hold them until they get used to it.

Couldn't I just drink more, I hate pills. Thanks, I know I was a little overboard; but a wiggly whining pup can make a person a little whacky Thanks for the advice, except for the pills. I am goofy enough without chemical help

I don't think you went overboard at all!Stressed out puppies are no fun, it can be overwhelming and upsetting for both of you.
Lots of hands on stimulation.. lots of praise.. He is still adjusting to his new home, and in no time at all he will adjust to the grooming.

Thanks Jan I know there are so many worse things to worry about; but anything that upsets him, upsets me. I'm sure you are right, and hands on touching will get him used to it in time.

LOL..you didn't go overboard at all. I remember the beginning of teaching them to let me groom them. Made me want to bang my head on the counter tops. I still have to hold Zoey with one hand and bathe with one. She is getting a bit better though on the grooming aspect.

Pills, booze whatever works! My Mom and I will be doing it together and I will probably have a glass wine if need be! Maybe two if they are really bad! LOL!

Short, easy sessions. Reward with a small treat at the end. I do a lot of introduction to brush and comb while they are on my lap, giving the puppy a special chew toy for while they are groomed only.

And lots of patience.
