Best Friends Long Island Dog Training. Hi all, I really haven't found any solution to my paddingtons dog park fear/aggression problem so we've decided to consult the professionals. We are seriously considering Best Friends Long Island dog training www.muttmanners.com. I am in Manhasset NY right now and they are in Farmindale so its not too far. Its pretty pricey but they offer unlimited group classes for the life of the dog. Soooo I'm figuring if any other issues popped up and i needed some more help I would have to pay another training another 150/hr every time. This way I pay a lot upfront but I can go to classes or speak to the trainers whenever. Plus they do everything off leash...like train the dog to heel without a leash even with distractions. Which would be pretty awesome if Paddy could be that well trained. They use a weird pins and needles collar that i didn't like at first but they had me feel it and it wasn't painful. And they are letting us observe a class on Saturday and still get the 72hour special price even though we probably won't sign up till Monday. They seem to have gotten good reviews on another long island forum I looked at too but i was wondering if anyone here had every heard about them or used them. Training Paddy and solving this dog park problem is EXTREMELY important to me so I would love to hear that people had good results before I plunk down $850 for a waste of time. Thanks ~Toni, Greg and Paddy

Well even though no one has heard of them, I figured I'd update. We had our first training session today and it went great! Paddy is such a fast learner. We barely have to press the button on the remote collar for come and heel and its only day one! Paddy is very tired from his hard day at work. He also seems a bit confused that suddenly the rules have changed on him. But I think he will get used to it soon.

| Wow-sounds like Paddy is doing great! That's such good news! I was just looking at their site. I am going to look into this school for Mickey. I am in queens, but my mom is right in Massapequa. What training method do they use? Thanks! Stephanie

They use a remote collar. Don't worry it is NOT a shock collar like the no barking or electic fence ones. Paddy had one of those and we got rid of it right away b/c his reaction to it was like 100x worse than it is to this one. He's kind of just annoyed by this one. They had me feel it too and it was really just like the tens units I use at work. They have a vibrate option also. So he idea is you give him little taps with the collar while giving the command and when he listens the annoying tap stops and he gets TONS of loving and praise. They don't use treats though because they are unreliable. Just petting and saying "good dog, good sit" and stuff like that. I wasn't sure I'd get criticism for using a collar but so far its very effective and paddy is no worse for the wear. They also have a trainer named Mary who is an expert on small dog training. Unfortunately she went on vacation so we have another guy but he's still good with Paddy Today we went on a walk and I only had to tap him once to heel the whole time. The goal with the is that your dog can eventually heel with you off a leash and be 100% reliable. Last edited by paddys mom; 08-25-2007 at 07:30 AM.

Hi, we are still doing great with it! I can walk him around quiet places without a leash. And best of all I am able to stop him from fighting over toys and being possessive at the dog park! I highly recommend it. Good luck and maybe we'll see you at a group class!
