Plane Sully in New York City?

Yep! We leave Thursday morning (May 18) for a five day stay in New York City for my husband's 25th birthday! (Thru the night of the 22nd.) We will be staying with friends in Astoria.

I need advice on:

1. Pet friendly places, and not-so-pet friendly places in NYC

2. What to do before taking Sully on an airplane for the 1st time?

3. General recommendations on places to go, things not to miss, etc. (This is my 2nd time in NYC. The first was six years ago...pre 9/11. And this is Eli's 1st time!)

try www.petswelcome.com they have all the airline info you need.
nyc is pretty pet friendly. they are used to people with little dogs in their arms. they have tons of restaurants with seating outside. most upscale stores have pet friendly policies if you carry them. check out china town for shopping. they have alot of outdoor vendors with great stuff. especially, if you like faux bags. (fendi , louis vuitton , coach, gucci + any designer under the sun) sat/sun are the best days to go to china town. try the magnolia bakery near chinatown. featured in sex and the city and growing up gotti. they have the best cupcakes you will ever sink your teeth into. totally worth the trip. have your hubby stand outside while you go in! central park is dog friendly with a dog park. take the carriage ride you will luv it! nyc pet stores are awesome. check the yellow pages at your hotel. they also have plenty of doggy daycare. ask your concierge. without your doggy go to ellens stardust diner on broadway. awesome food and the waiters sing! prices are good too. carmines near broadway has the best authentic italian in the usa. trust me on this one my dad is an immigrant from italy. go for lunch. the portions are smaller and it's less expensive. a favorite hangout for celebs i have seen howard stern and christina applegate hangin out there. for theater go see the color purple. the best i've seen ever and i'm a theater person. worth every cent. the tourist trap at top of the rock (top floor at rockefeller) is amazing. if you go shoot for a clear day. the view is nothing less than spectacular. i'm sure you found a hotel already and public transit & cabs are pet friendly. be careful the people traffic on the sidewalk can be pretty intense. carry your furbaby on crowded streets. any questions feel free to pm me. i go to nyc frequently. have fun!!!!!

Thanks you guys!

Anyone else have any advice? Does Sully have to go to the vet to fly on the plane? Or can he take doggie dramamine or is there such a thing? For those of you who have done it, I need advice, please. :-)

When we flew to Oregon last year the vet gave me a "nerve" pill for Bonnie. I gave it to her going out and she slept the whole way...I didn't give her one coming back...and she still slept the whole way. We flew nonstop from Portland to Atlanta so it was almost a 5 hour trip. Sorry I don't know the name of the pill I got from the vet...you may just want to call your vet. You also need to check with the airline to see what records they will need for Sully. I think I had a copy of her shot records with us...but sorry I don't remember if they asked for it or not...this trip was over a year ago and I can't remember what I did yesterday much less that long ago .

I know I probably wasn't much help! I hope you have a wonderful trip and I can't wait to see pictures!!

Make sure he has a carrier that is airlined approved.... meaning it has to close fully. I don't know how he is but he is required to stay under the seat in front of you at all time...... this VERY strict rule.... I ALWAYS BREAK! LOL But I have a blanket and my MaeMae stays under it. SHe is not a hyper dog when we are out though......she is very good. I hope he is use to being in the bag. If not.... practice it with him as much as you can.
I live in NY so WELCOME! No dogs are allowed in anyplace where there is food. Some people can be downright nasty. Again, I do break this rule all the time because MaeMae is very good in her bad. I can't say that about my other yorkies though.... LOL
Most airlines do not require a health certificare but I carry one just in case all the time. It is a peace of mind .... in case it is required and you don't want to be stuck somewhere.
I've not done this but before I ever flew with a dog.... my vet told me I can buy baby benydryl and give it to the dog to calm his/her nerves. It comes in a dropper and you just give a sqeeze. I've never had to do this so you might want to confirm this with your vet.
Yorkies carry a very high price tag here in NY and I've personally been stalked in Central Park walking mine. Always be on alert. If you see someone following.... pick him up. There was a girl in Central park walking and someone came to put her yorkie and when the guy squat down to 'pet' her yorkie..... he pulled out ascissor, cut the lead, grabbed the dog and ran. It was on the news many years ago.
Gee..... I'm sorry to make it sound scary.... it's really not but you have to be careful. I don't let anyone hold my baby. I will hold them and you can pet them. Unless it is a family with kids..... that's OK. But if it's some older person, I sometimes even say , 'she bites' ! LOL Anything to protect my baby!
Have fun in NY. Happy birthday to your hubby!

ooo your gonna have so much fun in the city! i agree with yorky4ME, tho the city is a great place for dogs with lots to do, you have to be careful because there are some strange people around that will steal your dog in a heartbeat. don't let it scare you or deter you from going to central park tho. i love going there to see all the other people's dogs.

there's a med you can get from your vet for flying called acepromazine. it will calm your pup down. you might want to ask him for extra so you can try it at home before you try it on the plane. you can try a slightly lesser dose then the vet recommended by breaking the pill in pieces for the trial dose before the plane ride because you might be able to get away with a lesser dose. you want something that will calm her down but not totally knock her out.

You will love the city! I never gave a thought to the stealing your dog thing. Maybe to be safe you should buy one of those light chain leashes. No one could cut it on you! Don't let that scare you though! It's really a great place. I hope the rain goes away for you! We are going in tonight and it's been pouring! Yuck!

people here can be very annoying with little dogs thinking that they can just walk up to your dog & pick them up and pet them with out asking

Val make sure that you get a vet health certificate with you. Most airlines require that so they can be sure that your pet doesn't have rabies, or any other diseases. Something to look into. Also, make sure that his bag holds it's shape nicely otherwise the poor little guy will be smooshed in. Sam (luzangela) just flew back to NY with Maximus and she went to the vet and they gave her a mild tranquilizer, because he goes bizerk on planes or anywhere that doesn't allow him to run..lol..He barked straight for 6 hours last time and she wanted to jump out of the plane. We wouldn't want you to do that so maybe a tranquilizer while you're there for the health check might be worth a thought...hehe..have fun girly!

Hahaha - thanks for the advice. Yes we totally plan to give Sully some happy drugs so he'll relax and sleep the whole way there, poor little guy. It's only a 2hr flight tho, thank goodness.

How closely do they look at the health records?

I think they just want to make sure he has his vaccinations and is in good general health.
