| need opinions my yorkie has ear problems i have an 8 year old yorkie that has been plagued with allergy induced ear infections for the past few years..for the past several months hher episodes have gotten mor frequent and more severe...she scratches, chews her paw and cries..i give her benedryl but ive been having to give it to her every 3 hours lately...my vet suggested surgery..i visited a surgeon and i was expecting procedure to clean the canals...I was quite shocked when he advised a total removal of both ear canals! this is major surgery, very painfull, she will be hospitalized and on morphine for 3 days, and her hearing will be impaired...the side effects could be damage to her facial nerve causing partial or complete paralysis of her face....please help with advice, sugestions or similar experiences...i do not want to proceed with surgery, but i do not want her to be in pain...thanks janet |

| Oh, mercy me!!!!! Do you remove the ear from his ears? Have you tried different foods? Food can be a major problem with ear allergies. Here's a site that has some information: YorkieInfoCenter | Ears | Taping, Floppy Ears, Infections and Grooming Here is a quote from a question and answer forum: Raw chicken is better for him. I feed only raw chicken/beef/etc and my dog is SO much healthier than he was on kibble (chronic ear infections on kibble, no ear infections since switching to raw!) Is cooked chicken good for my Yorkie? - Yahoo! Answers About the hair in the ear quote: If there is any hair in them, it must be removed. I prefer my fingers to pluck out the hair, but sometimes the hair will be out of reach, a hemostat works great but you can also use tweezers. Those hairs have to go or your pup could get an ear infection. If this is too much for you to handle, then have your Groomer or Vet do it. Yorkie Grooming This site has a bunch of links that you might be interested in: Ask the Veterinarian: cronic ear infection, middle ear disease, environmental allergens Here's a site that tells how to take care of a Yorkie's ears: How to Groom a Yorkie's Ears | eHow.com Here's a site that is from one of our YT members, Walnut Hill. Scroll down a bit and she has some great information: http://www.yorkiesllc.com/yorkieinfo...egrooming.html I had a friend who used this solution for her doggie who had chronic ear infections and it helped: RE: Dog With an Ear Infection By JoanDogs (123) Profile Contact 16 oz. Isopropyl alcohol, 4 tablespoons Boric Acid powder, 16 drops Gentian Violet 1% solution [all can be purchased at pharmacy] Mix all in the alcohol bottle and shake well. Use an empty ear cleaner bottle or eye dropper. Wipe out excess. Takes about a week to work.http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf27556968.tip.html Kind of long. Sorry. Just wanted to help your poor baby. ~Joanne~

| Why don't you try another vet?? If you can get a car go to SmithRidge Veterinary Clinic in SouthSalem , NY- I love in the city but it is worth the drive- they will find a cure before surgery- could it be yeast???? Try probiotic yogurt daily but get a third opinion and please keep us posted!!!! |
