| Driving home to California Hey guys... I've decided to move back to Southern California and I'll be leaving as soon as next month. SOoooo I will be driving with my 3 kitties and my 8 month old Winston from Colorado to California. About a 17 hour trip I'm thinking with the moving truck. I'm a bit nervous about traveling with everyone. I moved here with two of my kitties, who I know will be just fine but I've never traveled more than a couple hours with my puppy and my other cat...not sure how he'll react. Does anyone have any ideas on how to go about this? I was thinking of getting him a travel carrier adn just putting lots of blankies and stuff inside and then just stopping every couple hours to let him out / give him food and water? Or are there special things designed for long hours of travel? Any advice would be much appreciated |

If you don't have a look-out seat for you dog, then maybe a little crate. I would also crate the cats as they can cause an accident if they are scared. Take bottled water, dish, paper towels, spray bottle of stain or spot remover, favorite toys, harness and leash and feed lighter meals. I want to welcome you back to CA. We did the same thing. Moved to TN. lasted 20 months and moved back. The only thing I miss about TN. is our new home and 6 1/2 acres. I would never move out of CA. again unless it's to Spain or Italy. | |

Ok! I moved from Dallas, TX to Southern California in May...... 2 trunks, one driven by my brother (who drove straight through) my husband drove the other with 2 yorkies in 2 Car Seats......I drove the Durango with 4 show dogs all in crates lined side by side in the 2nd seat. I made special pads and neck pillows for them and crate covers so the air conditioner was blowing directly on them. For the most part they slept. Stopped every 4 hours at a rest stop. Pulled out a couple of x-pens to potty them and give them water.....Spent two nights in motels. LaQuinta and Best Western are very pet friendly. In the hotel room I set up Kennels, with their beds, food dishes and water bottles... they were pottied in the x-pen and then allowed to run the room before bed time. It wasn't the easest thing to set up and take down equipment....Good thing I was use to doing this type of stuff, since I do it most every weekend when I'm showing and the dogs are use to travel.....It was an adventure....and the dogs were great. I had a plug in refrigerator....dog meds available, piddle pads, puppy wipes, plastic bags for picking up poop, a big bottle of water to pour over the area where the dogs soiled......all the essentials needed for an emergency.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Welcome back to CA. Mardelin gave you some really good advice on how to travel; don't leave the dog alone and watch your back at rest stops--there have been thefts of animals at rest stops--there are sick folks out there. |
