| Road Trip, bad idea.. For Memorial Weekend, my friends and I decided to go to Orlando for the holiday weekend and my bf's birthday. I have yorkie, Biggie and my girlfriend has a maltese, Tasha. We live in Michigan and decided to make it a road trip so we could bring our dogs (neither of us have had our babies on a plane). Even if it was about 18 hours, we agreed it would be more fun taking a road trip. I never have had a problem with Biggie in the car. We've gone to Chicago (5 hour car ride) and Up North (3 hour car ride) and Biggie never had a problem... he actually gets excited during car rides, even if they're just down the street to PetCo. We left during the evening, we rented a mini van, Biggie, my boyfriend and I in the back. The seats were "stow and go" so we took out the middle seats. About an hour into the trip, other than Biggie's normal panting in the car, he started making a hacking noise. He had severe shortness of breath. I gave him water, hoping to calm him down and make him cooler, but it didn't help. Then, Biggie began to throw up. He threw up the water I had just given him along with a white foam substance. We pulled over, and let Biggie walk around and calm down. He then continued to throw up the white foam substance. Then I get worried and decide to call my emergency vet. They tell me to give Biggie Benadryl (kids) and not to give him food. They said he was nauseous and had anxiety. So we give him Benadryl and continue on for an hour. THEN, Biggie continues to have shortness of breath and the hacking noise. He throws up, we pull over again after an hour on the road. By this point, we were gone for 5 hours and only made it 2 1/2 hours away from home. After contemplating our options for about 45 minutes at 3am, we decide to turn around and go home. The entire 2 1/2 hour car ride back, Biggie was continuously panting and hacking. He also threw up again 2x. Once we get back to my house, he's perfectly fine. He even jumped back into the van while we were unloading our luggage. We ended up leaving Biggie at home and had my friend house/dog sit. We flew out to Orlando the following day. Anyone else have problems like this on a car ride???? Biggie ALWAYS pants when he's in the car, but this time he was panting, having shortness of breath, and throwing up. The vet said it was anxiety and motion sickness. If he's never had this before, why did this happen? I can't even think about bringing him on a plane. Do any of you give your dogs medication before a car or plane ride?? Any help and advice is much appreciated. I love bringing Biggie along on our trips, but this horror story makes me think twice now about bringing him anywhere.

| Mr. Biggs used to get car sick when we took long car rides (4 hr trips to miami). He would throw up a couple times if he had food/water before or during the trip. I spoke to the vet and he said not to feed him or give him water before we leave and to give it to him once we arrive. I did that and he was fine... just slept the whole way Also, your vet can give you pills to calm your dog down so that he won't get anxious. I know they do it for dogs on the plane, but i'm sure they'd give it to you for car rides too.

| I suppose being in a different car with different people and the other dog might have brought on additional excitement that your baby could not handle?

Anyways it doesnt drug them but it calms them down and they can get thru it without the drugged effect. Also I have been told Ginger Snaps will do it for some dogs. Hope this helps. Deana | |

| Car ride for yorkies, difficult experience All the yorkies I had, got very anxious in the car, even if it's a a short ride. Kissie is not the exception. This morning, I took her to the grooming (15 mn distance). She was panting, crying and even if she was in the back seat, it made me feel so nervous to drive like this. I never couldn't take her to a long trip. When I take care of my sister's dog, a very small chihuaha, she is in the car like an angel, she does'nt move and sleeps pleasantly. But my yorkie is normally very hyper and in the car, she becames very anxious. |

| Both mine get vcar sick. They start with the slobbering, panting and the get sick. I have tried several things: first slowly getting them used to the car, short trips ect. then rescue remedy-that didn't work and then quiet moments-that didn't work either. Earlier this year when Sissy had her check up I spoke to the vet about it. Thursday when I took Bubba for his I told her about them both puking in the car and she figured out the dosage for Dramamine and said to give them a dose of that two hours before leaving. So that's what we will try next.

^^ I totally agree. Even if the couple we were driving with was the same couple we went to Chicago with on Biggie's 1st road trip, the van and the other dog may have been a factor. Thanks for all the input everyone!!! I'm hoping to still bring Biggie on another trip to Chicago over the summer. I'm willing to try pills to help him have a better trip. Before our trip I'm probably going to visit the vet to make sure we don't have another incident. I'll keep everyone posted on his road trip progress!

| My shih poo sits stone still. He doesn't move, HE"S TERRIFIED!!! He only pukes if the ride is longer than about 15 minutes and curvy. Otis is a wild man, all over the car and he loves to go.. Poor Ollie, He tries to get excited because he knows Otis is but he still pukes. He definately doesn't enjoy it.

| I've had similar problems with my Max. And we couldn't just pull over and go back home. We had a 10 hr drive each way and the entire way there, he panted, licked, whined, was hyper, everything but puking (thank goodness!)...when we'd gone before, he was FINE...a little angel; he slept most of the way and back and we had no problem (he was pretty young then though). So we kept thinking maybe he had to go to the bathroom and kept pulling off at rest stops to let him out, but he wouldnt' go. Then we thought he was hungry...nope, he wouldn't eat. It was just awful! He was FINE once we got out of the car. Once we got to our destination, I went to the health food store after getting online here to see what other people had done for their dogs, and got some Rescue Remedy. Well, I decided to test it out on him a few days before we got into the car to come home, just to make sure it was going to work. He started hallucinating . Luckily, my dh was OUT at the time or he would have been FRANTIC. I figured it would wear off, so I took Max out for a LONG walk and sure enough after about an hour, it did. I went to Petco after that, and they suggested a pill called "Content-UM"....I gave him half a pill (they're hard to break in half too) in a treat, but I had to give it to him about every two hours. It seemed to help some, but once it got dark, he was all nervous again, so maybe it was just a coincidence. Regardless, if you decide to go with the Rescue Remedy (it DOES work for a lot of other people's dogs), check on the ingredients; one of the preparations contains a lot of alcohol and the other one doesn't. You want the one that does NOT contain it. I'm going to go get some of the "Quiet Time" and see how he does with that...thanks to whoever suggested it!

| One of my boys, Rexy, will get car sick if he rides in the back of a vehicle. My daughter has an Expedition with a third row seat. She had him and Rowdy back there and Rexy threw up several times during the 3 hour trip. She was bringing him to my hubby and I who were about to embark on a 4 day road trip We let them ride in their car seat in the front seat of our pickup between my hubby and I. He never got sick one time and we drove 3500 miles on that trip. We just got back from another road trip (2400 miles) and he did get sick once when we went sight-seeing for several hours on some very winding mountain roads. He didn't get sick though, till we got home and out of the car (go figure). Under the right (or wrong) circumstances, he will get car sick - but in the right circumstances, he is fine. So I think the combination of being in the van, unfamilar surroundings and people is what did your baby in. I bet he will be OK in the front seat! I would keep trying!

| Mine got car sick for a while in the beginning. Now as long as they can look out the windows and have a safe place to lay down like a crate or bed, they are okay |
