| International Travel- Very long flight In July we are flying to Europe from California. We have a 50 min stop in New York, and then a 9 hour flight to our destination. He is a 4lb boy, and very loving. I recently read Delta's regulations, and I'm glad we don't have to leave him at some dog kennel! The only thing that made me concerned is that the regulations said we are not at any time ( of our 20 hour trip) allowed to let him out of the crate!? Ouch.. We are going to try to let him out to hold him, maybe try to coerce the flight attendants with his heart melting face. Has anyone traveled for that long with a Yorkie? Any suggestions? Thank you! |

| I fly a lot with my pups. A lot of times I do end up taking them out of their carrier. This ALL depends on the flight attendants!! I suggest feeling them out. Also, I usually take them to the lavatory at least once to walk around a bit and potty. I hope this helps! Lisa

| My Annika just took her first plane ride to attend the Yorkie Fair 2007 and the first leg was 2 1/2 hours and a lay-over for about an hour and the second and final leg was 1 1/2 hours. Going to MI, I never had a problem taking her out of her crate and onto my lap . . . but on our return flight, (Detroit to Minniapolis) the flight attendant told me I need to put her back on her crate so I guess it just all depends. I could actually have easily covered her with a blanket as she does enjoy sleeping under the sheets but I didn't. I could not ask for a better travelling companion. Not once did she bark on the plane but she definitely got quite an audience for those that realized I had a yorkie as she is so darn cute . . . . good luck |

| Yes, the crates or soft-sided bags do fit perfectly under the seat. I have a Sherpa bag and it is awesome! Good luck on your trip!! Lisa

| just make sure you get one that is airline approved and also make sure that the top corners are soft so you can squish it down. You need to look at the Delta requirements for carriers. just any carrier will not do. |

| Hi, I have been just reading posts the last few months but even if i don't own a Yorkie can tell you about long flights, LOL! have flown with a shih tzu from AZ to MN, then MN to Japan and Japan to Philippines - dog was under my seat. NW airlines. On the AZ to MN leg of journey the stewardesses were very kind and let me put the dog bag on the set next to me which was empty and we just put the seatbelt on handles of bag. But this was before 9-11. It was a 3 months before 9-11. I flew First class and my dog started to bark, I was allowed to take dog out of bag from under the seat and put him on my lap. For bathroom what I did was bring wee wee pads in my bag. Then I would take whole dog carrier with dog in it to bathroom. I put down wee wee pad on bathroom floor and put dog on it and I sat on closed toilet seat - WAS A TIGHT SQUEEZE, LOL LOL! But I am small and my dog is small. |

| ask for a window seat so when you slip the dog onto your lap people are less likely to notice. put a blanket on top of your baby too. i try to bring very little attension to myself. i don't ask the attendant or alert them i have a dog. i feel like "what they don't know won't hurt them". if they know you are trvling with a dog and tell you he can't come onto your lap they will be keeping an eye on you. **** for long flights wee wee pads work great in airport and airplane restrooms.

| Also bring a leash, hehehe when the dog pees in an airport restroom put down wee wee pad and let dog pee and leash him, or he won't pee and try to visit as many people as he can in restroom as everyone will start going ohhh and ahhhh. |

| Hmm About the bathroom breaks. Jake doesnt always use the puppy pads. I was thinking of maybe one of those doggie diapers, the ones used for female dogs in heat? He's really small. Or any other suggestions? How do you make your Yorkie go on puppy pads? Did your vet give you anything to make yur pup drowsy so he just wants to sit or sleep? Thanks! |

| Did your vet give you anything to make yur pup drowsy so he just wants to sit or sleep? most airlines have regulations against giving them any thing like this. it's posted on their websites under the 'traveling with pets" section. |

| We have traveled with Bebe from Balto to Florida and back and my vet does give me a sedative to give Bebe but he was very apprehensive. So we just gave him a quarter of the pill and it does slow everything down including his urgency to pee. Dont give them alot to drink or eat. be4 you leave and just little snacks and water. You must keep them hydrated. He was fine and does sleep most of the time. As stated above-IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE FLIGHT ATTENDENTS. Our trip home was wonderful-the flight attendent was a sweetheart and she asked if she could hold him as all the passengers left the plane. She had a furbaby too so that helps We have had nightmare attendents in the past. So it just depends. hope this helps |

| I also hand paint carriers that are airline certified and fit perfect under the seat and are also on wheels and a car seat. |

make sure that his carrier is the biggest size allowed in cabin . Make sure you take with you water nutrical treats and pee pads . With Royce they told me he is not allowed ou of his carrier but his carrier has a small window that I can open and he can poke his head outside also I kept the other side of the carrier open . I would take him to the toilet to make him pee on the pee pad every 2 hours place the pee pad on that foldable table thing thay they use for babies Also make sure he drinks water every two hours . During the flight from Montreal to Paris the crew told me the he has to stay in his carrier but I ignored that and I would take him out whenever they are not around . and anyway he slept most of the 7 hours flight In Paris he was on his leash and I mahe him play and walk . The flight from Paris to Tunisia was short ... On my way back I was business class they allowed me to use the empty seat next to me for Royce and Royce was on my lap or sleeping in his seat for the entire flight back to montreal and the crew went crazy because he is so cute evry 15 minutes each one of them would come to pet him or give him water ....I was lucky Last edited by myriamha; 06-01-2007 at 10:34 AM. | |

| wow i love to hear stories where the stewardis let you take out your babys from the carriers. I will be traveling at the end of the month from NY to NC which is only a 2hr flight but my baby is good he's always calm so hopefully he will be the same way on the flight im sure he will. Also i read somewhere that you should feed them 4hr prior to the flight. Is this true have you all with held food for that amount of time.
