Bahamas Travel Experience? Remy and I are headed to the Bahamas (specifically the Abacos) in a few months. I already have his import permit from the Bahamian Dept of Agriculture and he will obviously have his USDA form and all of the requisite shots and corresponding paperwork. Based on my research, the Bahamas pet requirements stipulate the pet must be seen by a licensed vet within 24 hours of arrival on the island. Does anyone have any experience traveling to the Bahamas? Is this requirement of a vet visit strictly enforced? This vet visit requirement is problematic for me as there are no licensed vets on the specific island I will be visiting - it will require me to get to Marsh Harbor or worse Nassau to find a vet. It seems like a seriously inconvenient and pointless requirement. Remy has traveled internationally with me on several occasions however we have never visited the Bahamas together. Any input on Bahamian pet travel would be appreciated!

I have never travelled to the Bahamas with a pet but I was researching this issue since I may in the future as I was inspired by your post. I read the requirement the way you did that within 48 hours you need to find a vet in the Bahamas. However, I found this blog Taking Pets To The Bahamas They went there and although it was over 10 years ago, it seems the requirements have not changed. They had interpreted it to be that within 48 before arrival, a vet (in the US) needs to see your dog and complete the certificate. Since they went there, I'm assuming that had interpreted it correctly. It kind of makes sense since how are the customs officials going to make sure you do it after you leave them. Anyway, perhaps you can clarify it with the officials in the Bahamas. Another thought may be to call a pet friendly hotel, who may know the requirement. Hope this helps. | |

just found another post from someone who went there. They indicated that you also need to see a vet in the Bahamas, but that requirement is waived when the island doesn't have a vet. Taking your Pet to the Bahamas

Thanks very much for your replies. Both links were very informative. I will pull the import permit paperwork and re-read it in the context of the information conveyed from both of these blogs. I was thinking along the same lines as one comment made - "once you clear customs upon arrival, how would they ever know what you do after that?" Completely makes sense...how would they ever keep track of whether you went to a vet, or not? Particularly if you are in the outer islands. As a result, it makes sense that the vet visit would be waived in the outer islands. That would be ideal! We are not staying in a hotel, I am leasing a house.., am planning to reach out the owners to see what experience they may have (house is pet friendly) Thanks again for the reply!!

Follow up post to my original thread. Our Bahamas trip went very smoothly and Remy did very well on two plane rides and 1 boat ride. For those who may require this information, the following documentation was needed: 1) Import permit applied for and received from Bahamas Dept of Agriculture (done well in advance of your departure) 2) Permit (AGR VS1) - the document you will receive back from Bahamian authorities when you apply as per note above in #1 3) AGR VS1 A - form completed by your vet here that you will receive with the permit 4) USDA Form 7001 (Does not have to be USDA certified) I also took but did not need: Rabies certificate, Proof of Microchip, and his picture Have two copies of everything Since we traveled to the outer islands, I did not do the vet visit that is stipulated and there were no consequences. Not sure how this may be different if you are going to Grand Bahama, or other main islands.
