| Flying with a 5-month-old Yorkie Hi everyone. I hope you can help me with this. We will be taking a 1h45min flight in 2 weeks and we intend to bring our 5-almost-6 month old puppy with us. However, the airlines in our country do not allow pets in the cabin, so he will have to fly separately in his carrier that will be in the cabin for live animal. I've studied the documents required, but I am so worried if it's too much for a 5 month old puppy and what can we do to make his flight a bit more pleasant? My friends have taken their dogs with them many times before and they say he should be doing okay. But I am still soooo worried. I do not want to leave him at home since we will be gone for almost a week. I would really appreciate your help on this. |

| My honest opinion on this is don't do it. My boy flew to me from his breeder's and it wasn't a pleasant experience. He was older, and could probably have held it the length of the flight, but he was probably scared and went on himself in the crate. They sent him freshly bathed, and I had to bathe him again as soon as we got home. He was just incredibly smelly. You also have to remember the flight might be less than 2 hours, but you have to check your dog in way before that. Then they wait on the plane, and wait to be taken off it, and after a long wait, they will be reunited with you. It could be that I'm a total chicken, and I hate the thought of Kaji going through that again. It was just too stressful for him. Who knows, maybe your pup will be ok?

| I would NOT do it. I have read many horror stories of dogs that ride in the cargo area of a plane. Especially during the warmer months. These little ones can dehydrate so quickly or worse. MAybe a pet sitter would be a better option. I have flown with my oldest yorkie Levi, but he was in the cabin with me.

| Agree with the others, I only take mine with me when they can fly in the cabin with me.

| I personally would not do it. I was recently on a flight that was supposed to be 4 hours total. It ended up being 12 hours as we were delayed then rerouted then an emergency landing to refuel Sugar Baby was in the cabin with me. I was able to get her out of her carrier and also let her walk around and potty, hand feed her water through a syringe and feed her the homecooked meal I had brought along. What if she had been in the belly of the plane?? How much does your little guy weigh? Is he prone to bouts of hypoglycemia??

| Thanks you everyone on your input. I've been reading so much about flying your puppy in cargo, I am dreading the day. It's just that for some personal reason, I would like to bring him along and also he's so attached to us, it'd be stressful to leave him behind. If it was possible, I wouldn't think for a second to buy him a separate human flight ticket so he can ride in the cabin with us, but unfortunately it's not possible. We had to take trains last time we had to go somewhere and instead of 1-hour-flight, it turned out to be 12 hours nightmare on the train. I was fine though, because Teddy was with us, but this time it'd be easier to take the flight. I've talked to my friend who's been traveling with a Yorkie and he says Cody did just fine. Granted, they were all short trips (less than 2 hours) and supposedly they put your pet in a separate cargo cabin (not where the luggage go). I am still reading about all possibilities, I can't really make up my mind on this. |

| I know you want to take him, but we have to put our wants aside and think of what's bet for them. For a 1 week trip, I would leave mine behind. He is not a happy pup when I'm not home. In fact, my parents always report of how miserable he was if I have a night out. If you have the ability to take yours comfortably, it wouldn't be an issue.

| I just wanted to tell that we did bring Teddy with us and it was a very pleasant experience. He was the last one to board the plane and the first one to get off. He didn't seem scared at all, I put his blanket and my husband t-shirt (so he can feel him nearby), lots of toys and treats in his carrier. And when I picked him up he was still busy playing with his toys. He didn't pee or anything. After we took him out, he was all alert and content. No fuss at all. But it was a stressful flight for me though. |
