I bought 2 Tivos on eBay. I had them shipped to my PO Box in NY state. I went down for the day and picked them up. When I returned to Canada, even though I had already paid for them, I still had to declare them AND pay duty on them as they were acquired in the U.S. and I was bringing them back to Canada. Had I been down for the weekend, my allowance for duty free goods would have covered them, but since I was gone less than 24 hours, I wasn't allowed anything duty free. Mind you, on $240 worth of goods, the duty was $30 odd.

Hope that clears things up. The only way I see it being an issue (hence the reason I say have a cheap receipt written) is if you get a smart border guard, they may notice that their shots were recent and were given in Canada, leading them to ask questions. If I were you, I would declare the puppy, say you paid $50 for him/her, you saw him/her on vacation, and make that the end of it. If you're gone at least a weekend (48 hours) you would be allowed to bring back $400 (I think) so it would be a moot point.

Tara

Yes, that clears things up very well. I'll have my breeder give me a reciept for $50.00 and declare him.

I about did, I think if I'd had a heart condition I would have. Thankfully Canadian border guards don't carry guns or I'm sure at 25 I would've been dead from a heart attack! LOL

I wasn't suggesting you did You're doing everything right, and I understand being nervous, the only reason I'm so relaxed is from doing it so often (we have a trailer just over the border). We were just there on the weekend even. Our U.S. stop on the way down was spent chatting about the snow and on the way back Canada just wanted to know how long we'd been gone and if we had booze lol.

It was my pleasure, glad I could help. Feel free to ask more questions here or PM me if something pops into your head between now and then

Tara
Oh, gosh, no, I knew you weren't suggesting I had anything to hide. LOL

I really appreciate all the help.

I had a feeling that neither one would know what I had in my car, crossing their borders, but I will have my breeder give me a receipt for $50.00, just in case.

I am going to try and do this again.. lost the first one before finishing it.. just lost the second post too...grrrrrrrrrrrr

At the border they can xray your rv.. not always but it could happen going into canada..as long as you do not have anything you cannot have then it is ok..
As for medication.. does not matter what you are on.. if you carry a doctor's note saying you are under his care and he has given these meds to you, then there should be no problem. I carry meds for the winter coming down to florida, and have a note from my doctor.
As for a new puppy if he is old enough to need rabies then that is what he will need, chances are your new puppy will not be old enough to need rabies but should be up to date on all the shots and carry paperwork.. You will also need to have your receipt for the cost of puppy as I am sure you will pay tax on puppy going through the border.. I know if I was buying a puppy in the states I would pay gst and pst which is 14% of what the cost was.. there is no duty on animals.. but the tax for the province going into is what we pay the tax on.. so if your tax is like 7% then that is what you will pay..
Hope this helps..
We go through the borders all the time, we travel from canada to florida every year, and then back home again...
I know you will be just fine.. and sorry it took so much to get this posted...

OK, that's easy, the girls are due for their rabies shots in April and in July.

Thanks.

Oh, good, maybe they'll diagnose my RV. LOL Sorry, couldn't resist. You're talking to someone who sees doctors far too much, had to develop a sense of humor or lose my mind.

Thank you so much for the info on the doctors note regarding my meds. That really puts my mind at ease.

I appreciate you're taking the trouble to post again. I know what you mean about the aggravation when you lose one.

Your welcome, and if you need to ask me anything.. just pm me and If I can help, I certainly will do my best.. good to have a sense of haw haw....LOL
They do not always xray.. but I have been done a few times.. so kinda know the routine.. needles are important to the border crossings..mind you I have not been asked for my papers often.. but have been asked if I had them..
We also have all receipts right handy, when they ask how much we spend we have it all there on paper from me adding it up.. when your organized.. it seems to go a bit better..like never say you did not buy or purchase anything,., for they get suspicious...LOL

Thanks so much, this is all new ground for me, so I'll take all the advice I can get.

(My D.O. appreciates my sense of humor, says he thinks its part of why I handle my disease so well.)

I'll definitely have my paperwork with me.

I can understand why they'd get suspicious, if I said I didn't buy or purchase anything, naturally they know women are going to shop! LOL

I'll add up my purchases and have receipts attached.

AAHHHHHH MAN!! I love love love Canada!! We have a summer cabin up on Lake of the Woods. We got up there a couple times a year and our family (6 different households) and all are on a first name basis with a couple of the border guards being we go up there the same time of every year for the last 50 years or so. (The cabin started with my grandparents when they first got married)

We've never had to worry about bringing anything into Canada...just the occasional rabies certificate. It is usually going back into the US that you'll get questions. How many fish you bring back, how much you have in purchases, etc. (our family goes up there and lives off of fish so we bring back walleye and trout)

Have fun!! We want to see pics of your new baby as soon as you get them! Ha ha!

Oh, I am happy to hear that you love Canada! I am really hoping my puppy will be born and ready to come home during some good weather, so we can spend some time camping there in our travel trailer there.

Well, I don't think we'll be bringing back any fish....long trip back to NW IN.

And I promise to post pictures of my new baby when I get him/her. I have no preference, just cute & healthy.
