Default Bringing Jesse in to Canada.

Hey everyone,

As some of you know, I just left my home in Los Angeles and moved out to Miami short-term. Soon, I will be packing up again and heading back to my hometown, Toronto, Canada.

I just wanted to ask for any information on bringing Jesse across the border into Canada.

I have a Health Certificate from my vet dated 4 Jan 2008, and a certificate of rabies from a couple of months ago as well.

According to the Canada Customs website, I only need proof of rabies vaccine, but I just thought I would throw the question out here and gather some of the YT wealth of information.

Thanks,

Sarah

I am pretty sure that you have all you need. I had searched for another lady and found the same info you did.

Welcome to Canada which will be a major climate change from la and miami,

Sherri

I believe that the health certificate from the vet needs to be issued within 36 hours of arriving at the canadian border........

we frequently go from the USA to Canada.. however we are Canadian citizens.. however.. they will ask you if you have anything to declare... you will list whatever and say you have your dog with you... however.. sometimes they dont' even ask that.. so don't give more than what they ask for... have your papers ready to prove that he has had his rabies shots but out of the 100 plus times i've crossed the boarder with Layla i have YET to be asked to see that... even when going into the USA... so i don't think it is even going to be an issue.. should they ask you to pull over for a secondary inspection..w hen you fill out the form you must indicate under animals and livestock that you have a dog in the car (you aren't allowed to bring them in so make sure you have a crate because you will have to leave him in there and osmeone will go inspect your vehicle). Dog food is not an issue in Canada.. HOWEVER... when travelling from Canada INTO the USA you must have dog food that is made in the USA in its orginal packaging.. same with treats..

We travel to Canada from Wisconsin at least one time a month during the spring-fall months. We own a cabin up there....anyway. We take our Bichon along everytime and have only been asked for her rabies certf. a couple times. One time we got searched and had to get rid of all our dog food going into Canada, so now I have a certified letter from the vet stating that she has to have the food she is on or it caused health problems. She rides in her car seat and they always see her right away. She is a good thing to have along as they usually forget to ask us all the necessary questions and just talk about her. I had a health certif. done but they never asked for it so I don't do that anymore.

It might depend on which border crossing you are going through. We get asked alot more questions going though International Falls MN, than we do when going through Grand Portage, MN.

This is really interesting! We live right near Niagara Falls and wanted to go spend the night sometime this summer and bring the furkids.

Good info to know!

Really? I'm curious to know where you got that from? Hubby and I for 4 years have travelled with a sharpei and keeshond (both at the bridge now) every weekend back and forth to the US to our trailer. I've never been told that about food or treats! Of course they ask if we have beef (yay, bans been lifted!) and with the other dogs we'd been asked if we had papers (never asked to actually SEE them, just if we had them) but their food has never been mentioned. We've actually had long chats with the border guards about what food is/isn't allowed (we go to a very small land crossing - they're bored and have time to answer lol). I'm very surprised to hear this. Won't be a problem if it comes up as we feed raw now, but still...

Ironically I've had to show SoCo's papers everytime but once since we got him in mid-November - going in to the US and coming back to Canada. I used to always say travel with dogs if you're a terrorist as 95% of the time they might has well have been no one at the border for all the questions we got. (Where you going, for how long, ok bye - and no, not because they recognized us.) Apparently it only applies to uncommon breeds. Border guards don't seem to be swayed by yorkies
