Question Benadryl to calm them?

Im traveling with Izzy tomorrow via plane to Tennessee. The last time we traveled in December 06, he was 4 months old and did really well. Now he's almost a year and a 1/2 and is more energetic and aware than he was before. I heard that some people give their dogs benadryl to calm them down. Is this okay to give a Yorkie? If not what do you suggest?

Thanks!
Karla

I've heard of a lot of people giving benadryl, so I believe it's safe.

I give Benadryl to Mr. Biggs when he's itchy. It basically just calms him down and makes him a bit sleepy. I only give him 1/4 of a teaspoon. I don't see why you couldn't use it for a plane ride. He would just have a nice long nap. lol

Is there a liquid form that you give? Or do you break up a pill?

Our vet recommended CHildren's Liquid benedryl for Layla because she has allergies... she gets 1 ml and she is 6.4 lbs. i'm not sure about using it just for the calming effect.. i've read on here you hsoudln't medicate them when they are in a plane.. but i've never done it so i'm not sure.. i'd ask your vet. OH i do know about something called Rescue Remedy.. it is all natrual and is used to calm dogs down who are anxious in the car... might that work?

It is safe for Yorkies to have Benadryl but when I give it to Ellie for allergies it doesn't calm her down.

Benadryl does nothing for Rudy to calm him down. It does work for his occasional allergy problems though. He is not good in the car, so the last time we took him to the beach, we got I forget the name of the drug, from our vet and that really helped him. If you want, I can look on the bottle for the name of the drug when I get home and PM you.

I give him liquid children's benadryl. Also, I'd get an eye dropper thing to administer the medicine. Using a teaspoon or that little cup it is impossible to get it in their mouth! lol

I'd like to know about this as well. Tbone won't even go a few blocks down the road in a car without freaking out!

I give benadryl to Max and Abbie for allergies but my vet also said that I could try to give it to Abbie to calm her in the car when traveling because she get really anxious, works herself up into a frenzy, then vomits all over herself. It works really well when she gets hives but does not work to calm her for travel.
