OK, Uno is 5 months and he is not fully house trained yet. I am training him by using a petyard XT the breeder recommended (I use 5 of the 6 panels) and have his food/water, potty pad, toys, bed/blankie in there with him.

Well, he had been shredding his potty pad now and then which I thought "ok, he's a puppy, exploring" and brushed it off. But he has done it the past THREE days and 1) it's a waste of money 2) it's a pain in the BUTT to clean up 3) I need to figure out how to change this behavior.

I keep his potty pad in there just in case, (My mom is at work, and I go to college and he is alone usually no more than 4 hours at a time). He hasn't peed on his pad for maybe two weeks now, and I'm afraid to take it out...But do you think that I should take his potty pad out and start to see if he won't soil his bedding? I don't know how to get him to stop ripping the potty pad without taking it out. I have tried to stop him as soon as he pulls it off (I could even hear him bringing it to his bed this morning, and I caught it before it got bad).

Last week I walked him 3 miles daily for about 5/7 days and he didn't get any walks this weekend or yesterday due to rain/me being busy. Today he walked for 3 miles. Walking has helped his behavior a little bit but I think it's due mostly to his separation anxiety?...Like he's pissed off when we leave the house so he is naughty....Has anyone had this problem? Sorry it's so long winded, but how did you stop the problem? Did your babies grow out of it?

oh- also we have given him run of the living room when we know he has just gone potty/poop outside, (NOT the whole house yet) so I think he's used to having that freedom and doesn't want to be in the pen anymore...any words or wisdom or encouragement???

I've had my Aira since August. She started shredding the pee pad in her ex-pen when she started sleeping less and getting bored. We have our pee pad on a plastic mat, the kind that go under an office chair to protect the floor, so our solution was to duct tape the pad down and spray the edges with this spray called Bitter Yuck. It's made out of rosemary extract. That has fixed the problem. Good luck

My newest pup is a little over 4 months and she just started shredding the potty pads. I think you hit on something there about being alone. She only does it when she is left alone - well not actually alone, but with the other dogs and I am not in the room. It doesn't matter if I am upstairs for 1/2 hour or out of the house, she goes for it. She likes having me in her sight almost all the time. While that is sweet and all, it can be a problem, too.

The answer above about taping might work for you. I know my dogs would chew on that tape and never give up! Good luck!

Mr. Biggs did that when we was a pup too. I went to petsmart and bought one of the potty pad cases (it's a little white square that fits around the potty pad and holds it in place). That stoped the problem. I think it was that when we was alone, he would go exploring and I think the air or the fan would lift the corners of the pad and being a puppy, be would probably swat at it and from there shred the pad. He probably thinks it's a game. But I'd definately get the pad holder; It worked wonders for Mr. Biggs.

I think it is because they get bored. The taping may help. I used that with some of mine before I switched over to the washable potty pads. They can't shred them. It has been a lifesaver for me! It's not fun cleaning up bits of wet torn up paper potty pads. They frames can help some too, but eventually they figure out how to rip them out of there also.

If you are interested in washable potty pads let me know. I have some reclaimed ones "AS IS" for $6 each plus shipping. I usually sell ones that I re-cover with cute prints, but won't have time to sew for awhile, so am offering these as an alternative. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and remember to enjoy these puppy times as they grow up way too fast!

I have some washable ones and I really do like them. I want to get some more but have to wait a "little bit"

before I can. They work very well.

One way to avoid the mess and dust that happens when a puppy-- or older dog for that matter-- shreds up a wee wee pad is to use washable hospital bads instead.

I do private home boarding for small dogs and these pads are great!

You can purchase them on ebay-- new or slightly used great savings on slightly used). They are clean-- do not worry! The fact that they are reusable saves you money. The cost of pads really adds up. Also, NO shredding.

I have bought all my pads through vendors on ebay and it was very convenient. The only draw back is having to do a "doggie wash" -- but I just wait till I have a few pads, and wash using soap and bleach. They come out great, and smell good too-- an added bonus.

Yes buy some from Little Bit and you dont have to worry about shredded pads all over anymore. I cant put pads down for more than 2 minutes and they are ripped to shreds. The washable ones are much prettier and the disposable ones are expensive anyway. She does a great jon with them and they are a very good size too.

Mine does it with the News paper we put on top of the wee wee pads (to save money

) He does not touch it while were there but if we forget to remove it when we go out there is a mess!

When Venus started shreading her pads.....I duct taped them to the floor. Solved my problem with her shreading.

Later when she quit even trying to mess with them, I started putting them down and not adding the tape. Seems I'd taped them enough, she didn't try to shread them anymore.

Not much longer after that, I went to washable pads.

Man I have the same problem... thanks for the question, It has just happen to me and I had to give her a bath to remove the poop and smell on her

She is 4 months! I have to leave her alone between 4 to 8 hours... she's done it for the last 2 times!

I got mine from valethics.com. They are reasonably priced and I received them in a few days! I bought 8 of them, they are great!!! I wish I would've had these for years. I highly recommend them.

I bought the Wiz dog, that seems to be working for us. Spike would rip up the pad as soon as I put is down. I think he liked the noise. He will still try if any bit of the pad is sticking out from under the plastic grate. The pads fit well under the plastic grate if I keep the edges folded under.
