Default Problems with our Yorkie and new s**tzu

Hello all. We have a 4 year old Yorkie named Brittany and just got a new male s**tzu puppy. When they first interacted, Brittany snapped at the s**tzu and wants nothing to do with him. We had a Lhasa Apso that we got 2 years ago but had to put it down recently because of kidney failure...it had health problems from day one as a result of being bred too quickly. That was tough to take and we've since done our home work on breeders.

Anyway, when we got the Lhasa Apso, Brittany had fun with her when she was still a puppy. As the Lhasa got older, they didn't play much anymore but at least tolerated one another. Our thought was that Brittany would like the s**tzu in its puppy years at least. This is not the case however and we're not sure what to do. The s**tzu puppy is an 8 week year old male. Our one thought is that maybe since the puppy hasn't been neutered yet, Brittany doesn't trust him, even though Brittany is neutered herself.

Any info would be appreciated as we're at a loss. Hope it all made sense. Thanks!

How long have you had the Shih Tzu puppy for? Sometimes it can take a week or two for an older dog to adjust to a new puppy...maybe the Shih Tzu puppy is biting the Yorkie while trying to start play...puppy teeth can hurt and my dogs will nip if Soleil tries to play too hard...maybe she is just scolding the puppy which is ok as long as it isnt a vicious attack which will injure the puppy...even mother dogs will scold their puppies with a nip or two..

I have a Yorkie and a Shih Tzu ... no problems ...

May I ask you why you saw the need to use *** when writing your Shih Tzu's breed????

I find that odd ....

I didn't know the correct spelling was Shih Tzu, I stand corrected.

Thanks for the feedback all, we've only had the Shih Tzu pup for 2 days so maybe it will just take a little time. They've only been close once and our Yorkie snapped and they haven't been that close since. Brittany doesn't even want to acknowledge the puppy's presence...she'll turn her head the opposite direction if they're in the same room. Thanks again and now I know the correct spelling of Shih Tzu

When I got Pixie, Cali was very unhappy and would go sit in the other room and wantd nothing to do with her. It took a couple months for them to become friends and now after 5 months they get along fine and sleep together. Just give then time and extra attention to your Yorkie.

Wow, this really hit home for me. In may we brought home a new baby brother for Zoey(our 1 year old yorkie). He was a s**tzhu-chihuahua mix. Zoey HATED him. She snapped at him and growled and bit him and wouldn't have anything to do with me, her mommy, for 2 weeks. I cried every single night for the first week and almost gave him away. HOWEVER after taking the advice of many friends and trying things that made Zoey know she was still number one, they are now the best of friends!!! She is 1 1/2 years and he is 4 months and they love each other so much. It's exactly why I got another one...to give her someone to love and play with and it worked.

So all I can say is patience...Let Brittany know she is still number one..pet her first when you come home, give her the treat first, put him in the crate and play with Brittany a few minutes a day by herself.

I sure hope all goes well.
Best wishes here.
