Default Size of ball ??

After reading about Oprah's dog who choked on a ball and died...I'm starting to wonder. Is there a rule of thumb when it comes to the size of the ball vs the size of the yorkie's mouth? Gizzy sometimes plays with cat-sized balls. (Okay, that didn't sound right, LOL, but you know what I mean!) Should I worry?

Yes, I would think cat-sized balls would be too small - LOL - just kidding!!

My guess would be nothing smaller than their head. That way you know for sure they can't swallow or choke on it.

I'm still laughing over the cat-sized balls

Yea, I wrote that Gizzy plays with cat balls first and then caught myself!

Good one Judy!

However...yes! I think cat balls would be too small for our yorkies. I bought the girls small tennis balls. They are really cute (if a ball could be cute!) But, they are a perfect size for them. There is no way they could swallow one...On the other hand they would be too small for a larger dog so I would suggest anyone with a big dog not get these...Lillie loves them..

my babies have really liked the mini sized tennis balls from pet smart. They are small enough for them to get their mouths around them, but big enough not to swallow. We just have to keep our lab away from them.

I also like the little tennis balls. They are perfect for Paddington, but Heidi (my brother's s**tzu poodle mix) who is slightly bigger than Paddington can fit them all the way to the back of her mouth, which means they are too small. We have to make sure to pick them up and put out larger tennis balls (the same company also makes them a bit larger, perfect for both heidi and Paddington) whenever she comes for a playdate.

LOL I think it's an automatic edit thingy going on. It did it to one of my posts when I mentioned "that" breed! (I guess it's the breed that must not be named.) Shhh...I won't tell on you if you won't tell on me.

Glad you brought this up. I need to go through our toys. With infants, an easy test if that its too small if you can drop it through a toilet tube.

And Judy, please give me a hint, What is the breed that can't be named?????

By the way, I'm glad you didn't title this post "size of balls?" The way we all go measurement happy with our yorkies...

LOL! on the measurement thing! Too funny. The vet tech did ask if his testicles were fully dropped when we were asking the price of the neutering. I was like...isn't that a little personal? LOL

With the automatic editing feature, you can't type certain words, so if you misspell Shih Tzu... it bleeps you out.

If my dog played with cat's balls, I'd definitely worry (sorry couldn't resist)

But seriously, I think just use common sense and make sure you supervise. I don't think I'll be letting Jake play with smaller sized balls. Not worth the risk.
