I would take the pad out of the crate. The crate is supposed to be a tool to get them to learn how to keep their "space" clean and also teach them to hold it. When she starts to sniff and circle take her immediately outside and when she is done praise her and/or give her a treat. I used the crate method to train all of my girls (and my mother's boys). What I did was take them outside if they did the sniff and circle. If after a few minutes they did not go outside I put them in their crate and took them out again 5-10 minutes later. I kept repeating until they did the do outside. Also make sure that she has just enough room to turn around, lay down and stand up in her crate. This way she doesn't eliminate on one end and sleep on the other.

Maybe use and X-Pen while you are away if you can't take her out? I've never used one but I know a lot of people here have. Hope this helps
