Ugggh when will the biting end???? :sad: - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I looooooooooooove my 3 month old puppy Buster BUT the BITING!!! I understand that he is teething and I have bought him several toys to help him with that. But it seems like I am his favorite chew toy!! I have marks all over my hands from him and I just don't know what to do at this point. I've trie the stern "no bite", i've tried putting him in his crate when he doesn't pay attention to that, the yelping and ignoring him doesn't work either. What am I missing??? I can handle the some times frustrating potty accidents and the furniture chewing - but the biting is driving me nuts. Please help!!! Any suggestion is welcomed and appreciated!!

been there! try not putting him in his crate when he does this. his crate should be a place he wants to go, not one that he goes in because he is being punished. Can you try spraying him with a water bottle when he does this?? we did that with Layla and she hated it... stopped that fast! or a can with pennies?? many use this for barking but i'm sure it woudl work for biting.. if you have a sensitive guy like Layla you might not want to try this.. Layla would hide all night if she heard that noise. LAST resort you can spray your hands and feet with bitter apple

this stops dogs from chewing (usually on furniature or cords) but it will make him hate chewing on you pretty fast!

It'll take a couple of more months. It hurts, doesn't it? They have teeth like needles. I used to wear heavy slippers until Max stopped.

Keep a toy handy, a small ice cube is good, pieces of apple without the skin or seeds, those little carrots, and a heaping dose of patience. It does stop. Everytime you give her a toy, tell her get the toy. Eventuallly I was able to tell Max to get a toy and he would chew on that instead of me.

I used the SSST sound that I have seen on the Cesar Milan (sp?) tapes and that seems to help.

I then try to redirect him to something else and I actually did have perfumed lotion on my hand once and he did NOT like it! It was kind of funny watching him back away and rub his face. (I know that sounds awful...to laugh at that, but it really was hysterical).

So anything like that might work. I use clear deodorant on my cords and such (recommended by another YTer) and that really helps. Just remember to reapply it frequently.

Also, when he gets in a biting mood, it lets me know that it's probably time to play for awhile so I can thirty minutes or so and wear him out throwing balls and running around. It helps us anyway. Good luck!

Thanks for the ideas....I did try the squirt bottle....I think he actually likes the water spray! What is bitter apple?

Do be aware that this is normal puppy behavior and it will pass. There are things you can do to speed the process along.

When Buster takes your hand in his mouth, tell him no (not too loudly or you might add to his excitement) and redirect him to something appropriate to chew on. When he bites hard enough to hurt, you need to let him know. Yelp loudly, immediately break eye contact, stand up and turn your back on him for 30 - 60 seconds. After that time, all is forgiven. In this way, you teach your pup what is called "bite inhibition".

Be sure you have lots of chew toys and bones for him to chew on. Puppies NEED to chew. When he is chewing on something appropriate, PRAISE him heavily and drop a small treat. Always reinforce good behavior. Behavior that is rewarded increases in frequency.

Also be sure that he is getting plenty of exercise. As they say, "a tired puppy is a good puppy".

Puppies should never use you as a chew toy. Their mothers wouldn't allow it and you shouldn't either.

Puppies that are taken away from their mother too young, do not learn how rough they can play.

You need to do what another dog would do. His sib,ings would yelp and refuse to play with him. His mother would pin him down. You can try either method. But do not allow it to continue, believing that it is normal puppy behavior.

They do not like rejection. Pushing them away will just seem like a game, so yelp loudly, and get up and leave the room. It won't take long before he learns.

Hi there. We have a Yorkie that will be 2 years old this month. We had the same problem with the biting when he was little. I buy him round rawehide rings that look like donuts. I ALWAYS have 3-4 on hand. I make sure he always has one to chew on. I buy them at CVS Pharmacy for $1. That has been a Blessing for us since he was a baby. He still enjoys chewing on them daily. Hope this helps.

I'm going through the bitting stage also right now.
Wow, what sharp teeth they have.
I just try to subitute a toy each time he bites down on me. I think he's starting to figure it out.

i am taking care of my sister's yorkie puppy...and when we first picked him up he was so calm and quiet...now he's a little terror!!! my hands have all these bite marks...he's even made me bleed a couple of times

the penny in the can thing does work...he just sees the can...and he sits still...i do need to try the spray bottle thing though...just glad to hear that this stage will eventually pass
