Default Constantly Begging...

....when it's breakfast time, Lunch time and Dinner time for us. Sometimes she has already ate and other times we give her food there for her to eat but instead she wants to constantly jump as high as the ceiling with constant barking at the dinner table. I know a lot of people have this problem and it's tough to get them to stop. But my parents are starting to get annoyed and start yelling at me or my sister lol.... Does your dog beg a lot? I remember I read somewhere here about taking a spoon and banging it on metal (pots) or something like that... we tried that but she ignored it LOL. I love her, but sometimes it gets annoying having to hear her LOUD squeaky bark every time we try to eat. What are some training techniques I can try on her to TRY TO stop her from constantly barking/crying/ and jumping?

I found when I got 3 dogs, that it was unbearable to have 3 begging for food. What I did is stopped giving them anything from the table and kept telling them no food. Eventually they stopped begging/barking and jumping. Now they just lay by my feet when I am eating.

When we sit down to eat, I fill up the pups' bowls and set them on the floor next to my husband and me. They know it is time to eat. Our vet said little dogs like company when they eat--just like humans. I think she was right.

If you free feed like we do, I find it is better if you take up the food bowls a bit before dinner. This way they are hungry and ready to eat when you are.

Hope this helps!

i won't even let the dogs be near me when we eat. (it's a habit from my mom). but i agree with the above stating do not feed them from the table. even if they are so cute and funny.

Yep, my boobah does that forever and a day. There's a place by the side of the leather couch where I keep her bully stix and other stuff.
I have some books there and when I reach to get one she's thinking it's a stick..Also, I have to let her know whatever Im doing at all times. She's got me wrapped around her little paw! But last night was tough, she wouldnt go to sleep as usual....I checked her for problems but all was clear. Luckily we have a sliding door that leads from the den to the kitchen. We live in a townhome. Steps all over the place. When we eat, we close that door and sometimes she will be quiet, and other times she'll start whining. So, I know how you feel...I just take it a day at a time. I get a lot of info from reading these posts...

That's definitely the easiest (and probably the most effective) way. Joey has been taught to do a down-stay during mealtimes. But teaching that takes time and effort. Giving him a frozen, stuffed Kong works really well, too.

I'm glad I read this b/c while I have always thought the company thing it's glad to hear someone else say it. Reagan's bowls are in the kitchen so everytime we go in there to cook here she comes eating. And if she's eating while we aren't in there she goes and gets one piece then comes out of the kitchen just far enough that she can see us.

Ok now back to the original question. I agree with everyone to stop(if you do) feeding her from your plates. Even if you want to give her something put it in her bowl.

What I have done with Reagan is after I had taught her to stay I started using a "to your spot" command. I tell her "to your spot" then in the beginning I would pick her up and put her in her bed (what we use as her spot) and tell her to stay. The idea is that she has to stay in her spot until we tell her it is "ok" to get up. We no longer have to pick her up and put her in her in spot but we still have to walk over to it, I'm hoping that she will get to where I can tell her from anywhere in the house and she will go get it in. Anyway it works great for various times, mealtime is a big one, another is when we have guests over and she keeps jumping on them or if someone is coming over to work on something like the cable guy or something. If you try this out I would work with "to your spot" at a quiet calm time, don't start out with a mealtime. Add a bit of more time each time you do it then eventually when you are pretty confident of her try mealtime. Also if she gets up just go put her back in and tell her to stay again, even if you were about to let her up you(or you family) needs to be the ones to tell her when its time to get out. Reagan quickly learned to stay through all of a mealtime, after we are done eating I always give her a small bite or two of what we had as a treat. She learned that if she stays when we tell her to that she is definately getting something, whereas if she is under the table she doesn't. Good luck with whatever you try.
