Animal Smiley 049 Yorkie is almost 2 years old and not house trained

Hi There,
We have an adorable Yorkie named Scooter. He will be 2 years old July 27, 2007. My husband and I both work so we leave him in our kitchen with a gate so he can't have the run of the house. He will "hold it from 8:30 to 5:30. When I get home I put him outside. Sometimes he goes, sometimes he doesn't. If he doesn't , he does it the moment my back is turned. I can't catch him in the act. We have worn our carpet out shampooing it.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

LOL yes that does sound like an awful long time but it can be done.
Buddy is left from 8:15 am and I arrive home at 5:40 every night
unless I am caught in traffic. He is fully house trained and has never
had an accident in over 3yrs. It's all in the training from the beginning.
On the weekends I take him out at 11:00 pm to sleep in later in the
morning. There are times we get up at 8:45 and he has no problem.
His bladder is made of iron because of how I trained him when he was
a pup. All my passed dogs were the same way. I have never had a problem
with peeing and pooping in the house. Honestly, I don't think I could deal
with that in an older dog.
You must be consistant from day one in the training. You just can't leave
your pet behind a gate for 9hrs and expect him to not have an accident.
He needs to know where he is suppose to relieve himself to begin with.
His bladder needs to be trained to hold the urine and a schedule is key.
At two years old I would think he needs to be retrained. It's really not his
fault, he's just confused on what you expect from him.

Of course, it is possible, but Yorkies are known for kidney and UTI problems as they age..so I perfer mine to drink ample water and pee at will...but mine are 100% trained to weewee pads...

Perhaps, a belly band is the solution after you arrive home...

I think the bigger problem is that when you get home you put him outside (by himself ?). I suspect he wants companionship and wants back in the house to see you and then he has his accidents. Maybe when you get home you could go out with him for about 20/30 minutes and play with him in the yard.

Archie, can you walk us through your training techniques? Tank was fine in our old house but has been impossible in our new one....

Wow!!!!! I never said I expected him to hold his urine for 9 hours. We put training pads in the kitchen. He has the choice of going if he needs to.

I would definitely not let him outside without you. That way you can make sure that he goes outside and don't come in until he does go. I would use a command as in "go potty" and keep repeating it until he does go and give him a treat immediately upon going. Eventually he will get what you expect him to do outside. but I would stay with him even after he does get it, because it's the only way you will make sure that he has gone. (And you can make it a bonding thing between you and he.)
