Cry more training help!!

hi, i am new here but i have read many many threads but it doesn't seem any apply to Bruiser. He's 18 months and i have been trying to train him the whole time. i would like for him to go on the newspaper in his area and sometimes he does but mostly everywhere but there. he is the sweetest thing but it doesn't seem like he is real smart. he hikes his leg up on his bed, his bowl, everything. we have no other pets and it's a brand new house so hubby is getting frustrated. i have started taking him outside just for fun, not necessarily potty-training but hey, i'll take it if i can get it. but he would pee a couple of times outside then come in and go all over the floor. i am at my wit's end with him. i have been keeping the belly bands on him but i can't do that all the time and that doesn't help with the pooping either. please someone help me. i really do love him but he's driving me crazy after all this time.
Thanks!!! Jackie

I don't have any advice but can sympathize with you. Natalie will be 2 yrs this month and I still can't get her to go outside all of the time especially if it is wet. I never could get her to go on the pads, she just tore them up. We just brought home a new puppy a couple of weeks ago and she is better about using the pads but is losing some of her training and following Natalie's pattern of using my rug. I won't go into all of the things I have tried but if you find a solution, I would love to hear it. As my husband and I say all the time, it's a good thing they're cute!!

Maybe you need a trainer??Is he fixed?
. some dogs do this because they are showing you they are boss maybe you need to go back to square 1 and make sure he knows you are the alpha..also if you keep him tied to you at all times so you can watch him
I wish all the luck and Welcome to YT.
here is a good website for house training. http://www.perfectpaws.com/htrp.html

do you keep him in a crate or just a little pen with peepads/newspaper around the area?
and also..do you let him have free run of the house? (basically, do you allow him to walk into almost any room..wether you're watching him or not?)

potty training needs to be a really consistent thing, i'm sure you know that. if you crate train, then you can keep him in his crate (where he will sleep and learn to hold his bladder), and then take him out periodically & take him straight to the newspaper/pads in order to pee. if you just keep him in a small area with a pen and the paper is in that area...then that's fine too,but maybe you need to watch him carefully for a bit and when he's about to pee, you take him straight to his potty area/pee pads (which should be in his pen area) and then praise him a lot if he goes on there. also, if he's had free run of the house, perhaps he's learned that going on the rug, his bowls, his bed, etc. are okay. if he is out and about in the house, then i suggest someone should be there with him to watch him at all times (i sometimes leash my puppy and tie the leash to my belt loop so my puppy follows me everywhere)..other times, i just watch him like a hawk. if i cant watch him, then he stays in his crate or pen so that he learns to stay in his area and can't go potty all over the house.

a trainer is a great idea too, but in the mean time, maybe you can try that other stuff suggested to help him more along? or maybe try crate training? i also bought this tray from Petco that snaps and holds newspapers/pads in place so the dog can't really rip them out. it works great if your dog is doing that too.

i'm sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time. it definitely takes a lot of patience and consistency to get them potty trained, but i hope things get better for you! best of luck!

hi!
i keep him in the laundry room with half of it papered and he manages to pee on the other half of the room. i had tried crating but he would pee in it, too. i am a stay at home mom and am home most of the time so i have the time to devote but i can't give 24/7. i am thinking of getting one of those pens and putting it in the middle of the living room so i can see him 'in the act' and praise/scold as needed. when he's in the laundry room i cannot see him. i have a see thru gate up but it's at the corner of the house. when i let him run free i put a belly band on him and make sure he has pooped after his last meal. if not he goes wherever. i may have ruined him with the belly bands cause i don't know when he's going unless he hikes his leg and then i yell as it's NEVER on the paper. i put an empty coke box in the laundry room until i could get it out to the garbage and of course when i went back he had peed on it so i moved it to the paper and yippee, he peed on the box which was on the paper! does this mean i should put something in there for him to hike his leg on and he will use the paper if it's on it??
he's not fixed as he has the sweetest disposition in the world. he is such a lapdog that i was thinking of breeding him. don't know for sure.

First thing is to make sure that he doesn't have a bladder problem.

If it's not that, make sure his crate is small enough for him to stand up, lay down, and turn around. It shouldn't be bigger than that. Don't leave him in there for long periods of time. If you are going to leave him alone, limit his space to maybe just the kitchen or put him in an X-Pen.

When he does pee in the right spot, praise praise praise and throw a party!
