how long did it take your puppy to finally stay quiet when it has to stay in it's crate/kennel/pen at night or when you are at work?

i know you are supposed to ignore them when they whine or bark but is there any other tricks i can do? one of my friend's suggested i cover the crate with a blanket and lightly bang it with a broomstick every time he whines. i just have to make sure he doesn't sense that i am in the room. is that something i should try?

i should also mention he has a lab.

With Cali I was lucky she settled into her playpen immediately. I just had it next to my bed and if she woke up during the night I would put her in her little carrier on the bed next to me. Then there was Pixie who was 13 months when I got her and not housebroken. I put her in the playpen and she screamed litterally. I tried to wait her out but ended up putting her on my bed and she was fine. When I had to leave her during the day in her playpen she screamed pretty much until I returned. She never really adjusted to being crated alone. Luckily She trained pretty quickly if not consistantly so I ended up leaving her out.

i would suggest a large NO with banging on the crate... you want their crate to be someplace he loves to be.. not where he is scared. Layla took a few nights to stop crying. but he may be crying because he has to pee... so take him out for 5 min... give him a chance to pee.. then back in he goes... and let him cry it out.. Layla's crate is covered so that it is dark and it acts as blinders.. she can't see what else is going on so she sleeps. But since day one she has been in her crate on a table next to my bed so she can see me... i read that dogs are pack animals who sleep together so if he can see that you are in bed too... he might not feel so alone. Good luck.. it's a tough time but once you get through it he wil love his crate, Layla gets SO excted to go in it at night!

I think I've lucked out..Luigi barks sometimes when he gets left in his pen or crate, but for the most part, he's been a really good boy about it. I think that has to do with the fact that I really ignore him when he barks or whines. He stops after about 5 minutes or less..or he doesn't do it at all, which is great. He is 3 months. I think how long it will take will depend on how you treat the matter and train your puppy.

I agree that you should NOT bang that broomstick or anything else on the crate. You do not want to do anything that will make your puppy scared of being in what is supposed to be..their bed/home.

What I have done has worked very well for me..again, Luigi doesn't bark or whine much. Some days, he'll go for like 5 or 10 minutes and it gets annoying...but just be consistent and be tough. What I've done is: 1) I don't go to him when he barks/whines at all. No matter how long or annoying it is (I've been doing this since day 1 of having him, so he's never barked for too long) If I pass by, I don't even look at him. If he stops and takes a break from barking/whining, then sometimes I'll go to him and say "good boy." 2) When I leave for work I don't give big kisses and hugs and give long goodbyes to my dog. This can cause them to have separation anxiety when you leave, or can cause the barking/whining. 3) When I get home, I also don't run straight for my puppy's pen to pick him up and cuddle. I do my own thing for like 5-10 minutes and then go play. This helps with the separation anxiety as well, and could help prevent the barking/whining. 4) Sometimes, I play with him for a long time (just during our regular playtime together), and then I let him drink some water, go potty, and put him in his crate. He stays quiet that way too..I think cause he's tired from playing =)

Try it out if you want. But you gotta be really consistent! Good luck!

Freeway took to the crate nicely, after only one night of soft crying and me sitting by him and speaking to him, he was asleep and after that it was a breeze. But he is a really good baby!
