Default Bark Collar

Has anyone here tried a bark collar? They have ones for small dogs and that are non-shock. My friends have ones (for their larger dogs) that spray water or emit a high-pitched noise.

Its not so bad that she barks but we are planning a trip & we need a way to control her.

Also, has anyone taken their dog on a plane? Any special things we need to do/know? We have a pet carrier & planned to just show up and carry her on board. Thus the need to ensure she can stay quiet for some time. The trip is in august, so that leaves about one month to get her trained. Shes almost 2yrs old.

I have not tried them personally but my trainer recommends the citronella collars for extreme cases. What is she barking at? I would not suggest you actually use the collar on the plane. Is that what you are asking?

When you fly with a dog you have to make a reservation and pay a fee. They only allow 1-2 dogs on each flight and they have to fit in a certain sized airline approved carrier. The size varies by airline so make sure you ask about that. They will require a vet certification and certain paperwork as well.

You should speak to the vet about what to do when you fly with her. They might suggest benadryl or something else to calm her so she will sleep. It depends on how anxious she might be and the length of the flight.

Welcome to YT!
I believe you have to notify the airline as mentioned before and there is a fee for taking your dog in cabin with you, and they only allow a certain amount of dogs in the cabin. If you get there, and they don't want to let your dog on the flight because they've already reached the limit, then you will end up missing your flight. Make sure you call ahead of time. And they do require a health certificate issued no more than 10 days before the day of flight.
Most of the airlines ask that you do not give any benadryl or meds that might make them sleepy, so you have to check with the airline that you're flying with.

I don't know too much about the bark collar but I tried around Xmas to fly with Sasha and was unable to because I didn't get a health certificate 10 days before...but personally I don't think she would have like it at all...our seats were way in the back going to our destination and the noise from the engine was so loud I know Sasha would have been terrified with all that noise under a seat...there may be like a $90.00 fee

thanks all... gigi is a pretty cool dog.

Well, I think Im not going to do the bark collar thing. I dont want her going nuts in the airport with all the security. She barks at other animals and barks to get people's attention if they ignore her. She's kind of a diva like that.

We paid $85 extra to fly with her each way. They didnt mention health certificate but we'll get one. It should be a short flight, from Austin, TX to San Diego, CA. She's scared of the vacuum cleaner, so the turbine of a jet will spook her. BUt at least she's normally quiet when she's spooked.

thanks again all. I dont post much but I search often. And the yorkie videos are very funny.

You may try "Calm Moments" it is all natural and you can get it at Petsmart. a big bottle is only about ten bucks. I give my 5 pounder a 1/4 of a tab and she acts normal just isnot scared of the thunder and fire crackers outside.
Good luck.

I have never personally tried a bark collar, but my grandmother uses one on her miniture poodle that squirts water and it seems to be pretty effective. But I wouldnt use one if your yorkie gets scared easy or slighty timid cause a water squirt or high pitched noise or shock could freak him/her out and cause some mental problems.

I have one for my lab. It's a progressive shock collar. The longer she barks, the harder the jolt. She's 70 pounds and has a very high pain tolerance. And she liked all the things they said to try to get her to stop barking (lemon and lime juice, tobasco sauce)

It works great for her and it was the last resort. Bridget has one of those ear piercing barks and sometimes she just won't stop.

I don't know that I would try one on Bella. Thank goodness she isn't a barker.

I used a Gentle Spray anti bark collar. This really seemed to stop my yorkie Oliver from barking and going crazy around people (and other dogs). Hope this helps
