Default doesnt want to walk out side.

ive had my yorkie for a few months now and the first time he went for a walk outside he did very well. ... actually the first four times it seemed like he loved it.. then the next day he decides he no longer wants to walk.. he just stays put and even ends up laying on the sidewalk. but WHY. i havent done anything different.. he just doesnt want to walk anymore.. i have to drag him out from the front door. what could this mean and what can i do to make him want to walk again?

My puppy (3 months old) refuses to walk on a leash as of yet and I have to admit I've only tried it once because we still have to find a harness that fits her (at 1.12 lbs even the xtra small is too big and colars are either too big or too heavy for her!)- anyway I asked a trainer at petsmart about it and she said never to drag the puppy because this makes the puppy hate the leash even more. Also, to maybe sit down with her on the leash and have treats and just have her walk to you at first. Will he walk if you have him off leash? Roo loves to be outside off leash and runs all over the place chasing my other dogs and running to catch up with me etc. anyway that's all I can pass on since I have as of yet had no luck with my little pup outside either- good luck!! =)

Default Outside!!

Bogey peed on his pad inside until about 6 mths. The grass tickled him & he wasn't interested until all of sudden one day he halfway picked his back leg up & I thought he got a sticker in it. Low & behold he was actually lifting & I didn't know it. When they get about 6 mths. or so, they begin to check out their surroundings & get infatuated with it. Even my sisters' female loved to be outside with the birds, squirrels & blowing leaves. Anything that moves they love. Bogey now goes lizard hunting daily. Even if he doesn't find one, he's occupied for at least 30 min. The moment he runs out he's looking for a squirrel or a bird he thinks he can catch!

Did something frighten him on one of his walks? Or could you have gone too far and he overdid it? I carried Kalani for the first week since there was no convincing him to walk. He watched his sister, Hoku, walking on her leash and after a bit he decided he'd try it but loud noises or long walks seem to upset/tire him and every once in a while he just isn't in to it so I carry him till he lets me know he wants down.

Since you're in Vegas (I'm in AZ), I'm wondering if on the days he has laid down - is the pavement too hot for his paw pads? He probably doesn't yet have the calluses adult dogs have - and his paws might be more sensitive to heated pavement. Just a thought...

Have you ever considered getting another canine friend to lead the way? Lucy and Tucker "learned" to walk quite by accident... a big dog was going for a stroll around the block well ahead of them, and they spent most of the time trying to catch up to him. (little did the big dog know)

Default thanks.

thanks for everyone's suggestion.

to answer one of your questions.. i dont belive anything scared him.. although i do think me not letting him play in the gravel may have convinced him to no longer follow me when walking.

i thought about getting a friend for him to help but i just decided to have one of my friends who actually has another yorkie.. she told me that they play well, but didnt mention much about the walking thing.

hmm.. and the pavement thing.. i dont think so because i usually took him out at night so the pavement isnt too hot when the sun is down.

i guess i'll just have to wait this one out and see if the park will make a difference.

sorry to get off the subject.. have you tried ferret harnesses. We used that on Spyo when he was a baby he was very small. he fit in the palm of my hand.

Oh that's such a good idea- I vaguely remember something about using ferret stuff but I think that was my fiance and he was joking about how small she is =) I'm returning the harness we bought today so maybe I'll look for one while I'm out! Thanks for the suggestion!! =)
