Default Crate size and pee pads...

I'm a newb to all this YT. This will be my first ever dog and as a matter of fact, my first ever pet . I want to start out right so bare with me if you will

I'm picking Rusty up in 2 weeks. I want him to feel comfortable when he gets here. He will be 8 weeks old and is incredibly tiny. Maybe not the teeny tiny ones (Teacups???) but fairly small. But anyways, I'm about to purchase some reuseable training pads (pee pads). Should I go for those or should I go for the disposable ones? I'm also thinking of getting a crate. But I haven't for the life of me figured out what size yet. I heard that the crate should accomodate to the full adult size of the dog. I was leaning towards a 22" D or 24" D as they are the smallest crates I've found. Someone please help. I was thinking of putting food, water, toys and pee pads in a xpen with the crate inside it of course... Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. LINKS to products would be awesome! Where can I get an xpen?

I don't know about pee-pads but as for walking him - not until he has ALL of his shots. Yorkshire Terrier books have a list of everything thing he'll need, when he needs it. The vet(s) I went to previously never suggested anything, they always asked what I wanted done, so having that list of vaccinations was a life saver. (btw that's a sign of a bad vet!)

I have a client that has me take her puppy in the backyard instead of walking him until he has all his shots. Some people don't even let their pups set paw out of the house until they're vaccinated though... the safest backyard is one that no other animals have access to, as some things are highly contagious.

As for the crate, you'll probably need the smallest one. My boy is big as far as yorkies go (11 lbs) and a medium crate is like a mansion for him. =)

This is the crate we bought for Wrigley:
http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...Text=crate&N=2

We bought this when we brought her home at 12 weeks and she weighed 1.13lbs and she's now 9 1/2 months and weighs 4.11. She loves it and sleeps in it at night. We have the smallest size and it's enough room for her to go in, turn around and sleep. When we are gone during the day, we put it in a baby playpen without the door and pee pee pads.
I would recommend if you have the room to put it in an x-pen or metal cage. If you do a search on here, you will find pictures of set-ups different people have for their dogs.
We use both the reusable and disposable pads. We use the reusable in the car and her playpen, the disposable in her litter box.
Congrats and good luck!

I just wanted to add if your bringing him home at 8 weeks, get some Neutra-Cal. seems most yorkies haven't been weened very long at that age, if they've been weened. neutra cal keeps them from going into hypoglycemia attacks when they don't eat well, when they're young.

think petsmart has x-pens, and make sure its a taller one. My venus learned to climb outta one fast. I wound up later getting baby gate that has the "bars" and not one she could climb. I also had to put plexiglas on the front so she wouldn't walk inbetween the bars. Plexi glas can be bought and cut to most any size at Lowe's or home depot. I drilled small holes and attached them to the bars on the gate.

crate needs to be just big enough to stand up, turn around and lay down in. any larger and they'll pee and poop in the other end.

I now use washable pee pads, and love them. I'm no longer having to buy them all the time now. I put mine in kitty litter boxes, that I modified the front so she can walk in. Venus is a walking pooper, so it gave her the boundaries she needed not to walk off the pads while using the bathroom.

here is the link to the washable pads I use for my bunch. http://www.valethics.com/ i will never go back to the disposable ones. they leak and have a terrible odor. my only complaint with them is that when i am trying to train a litter of babies, for some reason they don't use them as well as the disposable ones. probably because they stink so bad. Congratulations on your new baby.
