Default The command " Watch Me"

we go to our 4th puppy class at Petsmart Saturday afternoon.
The first training class the trainer showed us how to teach the command " Watch Me".....I taught Gordon. To be honest, I doing it often during the day, will say it and he sits and watches me, he has learn the command pretty well.
He has learned sit, down, walk nice on a leash, leave it and give......now those commandments , I can why you would want them to learn.
On our second and third class, the trainer asked are we teaching them the commands , sit, down , leave it, walk nice on leash, and give......she has never mention Watch Me again.

What do you use "Watch Me" for?
I understand you want them to look at you and hold eye contact....but Gordon does anytime I give him any of the other commands.

The only thing I have used the command for is to take his picture....and he will look at me, and I hold the treat right above the camera.....he sits and watches me until I release him and give him the treat.

So what do you use it for?

Watch me is to ensure that he is looking at you.

I train my dogs with hand signals so I train Watch me first. Then I always use a hand signal with all my commands - quickly they learn the hand signals and they will always be looking to you.

It is important that they are looking at you - if they are eye balling a cat and you give a command your command is not the foremost in their mind.

Sounds like you have a good trainer - Click and treat!!

Thanks!

He is in the puppy class and she does seem pretty good. The first time we went I seen how young she was....but got to say, she loves the animals and loves working with them.

I will start using the command when he is distracted and I want his attention. I also want to start using the hand signal to go with the command.

im a petsmart trainer... and everyone always second guesses me at first because i look young. but i promise they dont just throw us in there and say "TRAIN!" lol

your lucky ur baby watches you whenever your giving commands... alot of dogs in the classes dont just know to look at their owners so the watch me really comes in handy for them. in my classes we practice having them do things with only hand signals and no voice commands... so getting them to look at us is really important.

good luck in your classes! hope your having fun!

My 2yr old Yorkie has an issue at times when on leash and walking past another dog/person so I try and intercept this when I see someone walking towards us I will tell Cooper to sit, and then "Watch me", he is so intent on doing this that "generally" he will now ignore the person/dog walking by. Its a great command actually, plus its also a bonding thing as making that eye contact is great. Alot of the training I do is hand related and not necessarily voice related, so the watch me command must be down pat to go forward.

I use "watch me" all the time! Tia graduates from the puppy class on Saturday. I use watch me to get her attention...especially when I'm about to ask her to do something more challenging...like "Stay" when I step beside her and don't want her to move until I give the release word. It's a good way to know if they are tuned in to pay attention to you so they can obey other commands. Seems to get Tia in the "zone" for practicing our other commands
