She literally ran about 1/4 mile before I caught up with her by the RR tracks... . Here I go running through my neighborhood in Pj pants and a t-shirt (no bra mind you, boobs floppin') and house shoes. I was so mad at her that I wanted to strangle her. We have a fenced back yard but I would like for her to be able to be in the front yard with me sometimes with out running away. Do all yorkies run away? She minds me if we are in the house but if she is outside she is a crazy idiot! Anyone else have this problem?
I don't mean to laugh, because I know that is SO scary...but the way you tell it is hysterical. I can just see myself in your place doing the same thing...running through the neighborhood half naked...scared to death that my baby will be run over.

Trust me on this one....we were at a park last weekend with at least 40 other Yorkies running around, and when we shook that treat jar, she left all her playmates and ran right to us!!! Try it
Already tried it...don't work....

We just learned this in our intermediate class at petsmart. It is called the wait command (different from stay).

Start out not doing it at the door--just in the room. Put her on her leash. Have her sit, then move your finger to one side and say wait. Drop the leash. Back away a few steps and do the finger and "wait" again. After you back up a few more steps, then tell her "okay, come". Do that over and over, lengthening the time before you allow her to come. Then practice it at the door, saying "wait" again as you start to guardedly open the door. Then praise and treat.

Of course, it takes lots of practice. good luck

I forgot to add...when they run, never chase them because then it becomes a game of chase to them and they will keep running.

She never even knew I was behind her, she never looked back, she tucked that butt under and raised her head up and took off like a rabbit as fast as she could and didn't look back... . I don't think she would have stopped when she did but she came to another dog behind a chain link fence and stopped to see him. I though I was going to have a heart attack because I am so bad out of shape and I haven't ran like that in years....

Oh...she's one of those!! LOL!
Well I say keep trying so she learns what it means. You may have to find a treat that she is just crazy for....mine will do anything for toddler baby chicken hotdogs! Though I try not to give them too many....and they don't shake in the container, you can put other kibble in there just to make the noise and then reward with her favorite...whatever miss finicky favors that is!!

All good suggestions in above posts. The come command is really important. It can save their little lives (not to mention, make it easier on you!). Practice the come command every day!! In the house, in your fenced yard, everywhere. I started by rewarding AprilLove every time she came or looked at me when I said her name. Soon, I added April Come" and I would do it even if I went up my stairs or go into another room (although most of the time, they are glued to my feet anyway, hehe) and she would run to me. I always reward this. Now, I just say come and she stops what she is doing and comes right to me. And I still treat some of the time, but not every time, I like to keep them guessing hehe. Carry treats with you in your pockets, even at home. She will get it.

I havn't done it yet but have considered one of those little contraptions that makes sound that dogs don't like. you can place then hwere you need them and set them for whatever distance you need and the dog will not go to where that sound is. I thought it might be a good thing to try by the door as we are on a quiet dead end but right at the end of it where it meets the main street and cars travel pretty fast up that street. If Teddy got out and ran like a crazy man he would almost definately get hit. It really scares me and I would rather rely on something that makes the decision for him rather than relying on him to listen at a moment when he might be too excited to think. Otherwise I like the gate idea as well.

Im having the same prob with lola, she is almost 6months now and ive done the whole running around the street thing in my nightwere ! We are at the stage now where we can open the door and she will stay unless she see's our cat outside...then it's all too exciting to stay in! We have the treats in a pot we shake and it works when she is off her lead on our local field...but if any people walk buy she's off and no longer listening!!!! Im not sure how to get her out of that one!
