Default My yorkie charging after me

Hi Everyone,

My male yorkie Snickers is only 12 weeks, but is having alot of trouble being disciplined. He is constantly charging and growling really mean at me. I sometimes dont think he is just playing. I know he is only a puppy and I totally understand that, but did anyone else experience this.Does anyone have any advice on how I can raise a nice happy dog. I tell him no and he just gets worse and chases me threw the house and charges at me like he is gonna bite my head off. Is this something he is goes threw during puppyhood?? I just need some help discipling my little baby boy. Thanks

Mommy to Snickers!!!

Playing is one thing but, charging and growling sounds like something else. When he does this to you pick him up and look him in the eye..very sharply say NO! DON'T DO THAT TO ME! Put him down and walk away, ignore him for a little bit. Sadie got a little aggressive with me when she was about that age...this is what a trainer told me to do and it worked....

Yes, I pick him up and lift him in the air and say No snickers dont do that...And he looks scared while he is up in the air but as soon as I turn my back he is full attack again. I dont know what to do. He honestly makes me nervous at times.

My Betty does this also. Just about the only time she is calm is right before she falls asleep and for about 5 minutes after she wakes up. Playing consists mostly of her biting me or trying to bite me when I am holding her toys. I hold her down on the floor to show my dominance and she just will not give in. She'll stop fidgeting and growling for a second or two...but then starts right in again. She does NOT want to be submissive. It seems she tries to be a little less rough for a few seconds, but then she gets too aggressive again. It's almost as though she has too much energy. Could this have anything to do with not properly being socialized when she was a tiny puppy? Not sure, just asking. Thanks.

Animal Smiley 036 my yorkie charging after me

Hi everyone, I've been reading YT for about 9 mts now. This is my first post. I never went though this with my yorkie. He, Tommy turns 1 year on feb. 20th. When Tommy was very young he would try and get my attention by barking a little or whining at me when I would be putting on make-up or doing my hair. Very annoying, so when he would start I would turn and walk into his space and claim it. Do not back down. Firmly say " no " but do not yell. You do not want your puppy to fear you, just respect you as a leader. It only took about 3 times and he got the hint. He would then run off to play with my maltese Molly. Hope this helps, Pat

I dont know if this is the proper thing to do but........I keep a spray bottle with water and a little apple cider vinegar..I spray him when he charges and bites me and he stops. I can just pick it up now and he will quit. Im sure some of the yorkie talk people wont agree with that though..But it works for me with potty training too....

I would try filling a soda can with some change and when he charges you shake it immediately to throw him off. Typically, the loud unexpected noise will catch him off guard and will help to teach him that it is not acceptable to charge or growl at you.

The pennies in a can really does work to startle them from the behaviour they are doing!! Also laying him on his back and holding him there shows that you are in contol and you are the boss..then ignore his bad behaviour and reward reward reward good behaviour..good luck!! My husband and Reece play a game like charging each other but its all in fun and Reece loves it..wouldnt hurt a flea...maybe charge him back and see what he does lol..

I'm not sure you want to pick him up to your eye level and discipline. You need to establish the alpha role and tower over him. When he does this..gently press down on his back until he's laying down and then discipline by saying in a low voice no. Bringing him up to your eye level only allows him to think he's top dog...you have to establish dominance. Hope this help!

My puppy was barking at me and getting in a charge position and growling. Someone told me to look her in the eye & tell her no. That didn't work but Ytrs told me to show her whose Alpha in this house. I take a flyswatter and hit the side of her gate or cage to startle her then she stops. (suggested by the breeder) She is still nipping but It's getting better. I clap my hands real loud at her and tell her "that's no" or bad girl. Works sometimes, but she still tries to test me. They will try to dominate, but I didn't have this problem with Kodak. I am always looking for more suggestions. She will not rule me or this house. I heard about spraying just plain water in the face, I didn't know about the vinegar. They do need to be startled back to reality that Humans rule. The pennies in a can sound good to.

Thumbs up

Also, sometimes a snap of your fingers is enough to make them 'snap out of it'. I learned to snap my fingers by watching cesar millan and it works with all my guys. I found that if you raise your voice or get upset in anyway your dogs will react negatively. A dog respects a calm assertive leader not a loud, hyper, angry or frustrated human. It really sounds like he is simply challenging you and trying to be the leader of the pack. Next time he charges you or growls immediately (the key is timing) move toward him (take over his space) snap your fingers and say "no" very firmly (but calmly). I also use the "sshh!" noise to snap them back to reality and it works quite well now. But really no matter what method you use the most important thing to remember that consistancy is truly the only answer to any behavioral issue. You must be consistant and never allow this behavior.

I mentioned that a soda can with coins is a good option but I prefer to snap my fingers because I don't always have a can w/ coins in it on hand in every room hehe but I always have my fingers! Good luck with your baby.
