I started my 2 puppies off on litter box training (occasionally when we're gone for longer than a couple of hours), outside, and two areas on our patio that have plants and marble rocks in them. The outside part has gone well, the patio area has too because my hubby built a barrier around each one so they can't do their business on the concrete, and the litter box hasn't gone so well. Lots of cleaning the litter up. Anyway, it's been so cold here that I got it out and put it in their play area a week ago. They've been eating there too. To make a long story short , I've caught them going on the wood laminate floor several times, told them that was nono in no uncertain terms, and hoped it would work. Today, Monkey just jumped right in their (we had been playing) and peed!! I was dumbstruck. He still doesn't know how to sit and Lucy's been sitting for ages. A short time later Lucy did the same thing. I praised both of them and hope it keeps up. Monkey is too small to hold it for long during the day. I'm tickled pink!

Hi! I started Lexie off with the litter box as well. That ended up not working for me- to say the least. I ended up switching her to outside. It has taken me a long time, but she is now FINALLY (at 18mos old!) trained! And I know all about cold temps- it was below 0 this wk.(and last wk!) I put a sweater on her and she actually has been doing fine. I think the cold may even help because she will run outside, do her business and run back inside. I am getting a new baby next weekend and he will be trained 100% outside from the start. Good luck to you!!

Ughh...the frustrations! I'm glad you have found something that seems to work. FOr our first week we had Tia trained (mostly!) to pee on her mat in the corner of the kitchen, or else on the one in the masterbedroom (depending on where she was spending her time). We recently bought an expen....but now she's so used to the corner in the kitchen that she is still going there...even though there is no pad! I'm *this* close to putting a pad there again (even though we exclusively want her to go in the expen. *sigh* Momy and Daddy need to stop changing their minds!

I started my new pup in a "sifting" cat litter box. I don't use litter, though. I just use the box with a pee pad under the "sifter part" So It makes it kind of like a dog whiz, only alot cheaper. Now the pee goes below the grating and she doesn't step in it. The poo does stay on top but then I quickly pick it up and flush it.

She is doing really well with it! I am so pleased! I just wish the other three were as good! I like having the pad in a box so there is no peeing on the edge. The sides are high enough she can't straddle it.

I would definitely recommend it. It is only $11 bucks or less at Wal-Mart and they also can't tear up the pad since it is under the grate. I am also using the other half but need to find something at a home improvement store that I can cut to fit for a "grate" for the other one, but she does use it also anyway. That way I have two potty pans for the price.

I have attached a picture of they two side by side (they are usually in different parts of the house) so you can see what I am talking about.

Oh, and it is big enough that even my adult yorkies can use it.

Is it easier to pee-pad train them or litter train them? I have am 11wk old pup and she is difficult to say the least. Also I have been told it is easier to train 2 rather than one, at a time, is there any truth to this?

I say simply outside train them. My Max was litter trained when I got him, but it is just not my thing. It, in my opinion, gives them the ok to use the house as their potty. They never learn bladder or bowel control. It took me about 3 weeks of intense training and he is pretty reliable at 10 months. He still is confined during the day when I'm not home and crated at night. He understands "go Potty outside" and goes right to the door. Let me tell you, if you have been watching the news, I live in central NY and we have had 100 inches of snow in the last week. Max goes out rain , shine, subzero, and snow. Nothing bothers him! He is never out more than a couple of minutes because he knows to do his business. Pick one method and stick to it. Outside works for me.
