Default Suggestion in Pottying Outside

I've been walking sparky out since last month. He would not pee or poop until he gets home. I even bought the Puppy Housetraining spray and sprayed it outside the walls and it has no effect. From time to time he sniffs the wall but wont pee. Any suggesting on how i can train it to pee outside?

Thanks..

Default peeing outside

My Amos is 3 months old. He is hard to train outside. I take him out about 15 times a day or so ( I'm on Christmas break right now) he'll go outside and inside on the carpet too. The only advice that I have is a LOT of patientce(i know that's spelled wrong) take your york to the same place all the time to go. I feel your pain. good luck!

Is there a place you can go and stay -- walking around is too interesting for a puppy. They want to investigate everything. Like the previous poster said, take him to the same place each time and just wait. They will have to go eventually. I would wait a max 15 minutes. If they have not pottied, go back in. When he potties inside, immediately take him back outside to "the spot" and say "potty outside." Of course, he won't be able to go again right away, but you are making a connection. Then wait about an hour from the time he piddled inside, and take him out again. Put him on the grass and say again, "potty outside" -- keep at it. Most importantly when he does go in the right spot -- PRAISE and REWARD. Have a tiny treat ready and tell him what a wonderful baby he is!

I have been doing this for weeks (with two puppies) and we are getting better but I still find accidents in the house. I cleaned the carpets again yesterday. I called a dog trainer about this with one of my other little dogs -- they were reluctant to take on the project! They said the smaller they are, the harder it is to housetrain them. They said just be consistent and patient.

One thing I forgot in there -- if the puppy just wants to play when you are taking him out for a potty time, do not play in the same area you are using for a potty place. If he just won't go and you want to stay out for awhile, take him away from the regular potty place. You want him to learn when you take him to "that spot" you want him to get down to business. Good luck to us both!

This will sound gross, but it should help. Take some of his poop outside and leave it in the area where you want him to eliminate. Dogs stimulate themselves to defecate by smelling old feces.

Be sure you have treats with you when you take him outside. That way, the second he finishes, you can give him a treat and lavish, excited praise.

Default He Pooped.

I did take him out today again and there was poop on the floor and i had him stiff a bit then i pulled him away (dont want him to step on it) then unexpectally i watch him as we walked and he finally pooped for the first time. I was estatic. He has not yet know how to pee outside yet. I was amazed he pooped. THanks for all your advice. Keep the advice coming.

Thanks all. Have a wonderful Christmas

The big thing with outdoor potty training is trying to make sure he doesn't have the opportunity to go inside. That's where crate training is so important. If you take him out and he doesn't go, then bring him in and put him in the crate. Try again in 15 minutes. If he goes, he gets to run free in the house. If not, back in the crate and try again a little later.

Now, when my sweet Molly and I get up in the a.m., she goes straight to her crate and snuggles in there while I get dressed and eat. When she has to go, she lets me know and I let her outside. Sometimes, when it's really cold, she'll go out, then come right back in and goes, by herself!, into the crate again until she REALLY has to go!

Good luck! Kathy

Patience is one key to training to go outside. Catching them in the act is a good way to demonstrate a behavior that is not acceptable by simply saying no or bad and then taking them outside, and saying "potty outside." You don't have to be mean, just firm. Once they do it outside give them a treat and then a HUGE verbal reward, petting, etc.!!!! I also feel it is important to clean the area where they went potty inside so that there are no lingering odors to draw them back to that spot. It took me a good two weeks to completely potty train my yorkie to do his business outside. Can't tell you anything about the crate training as I have never went that route but hear it really helps in training them. Be patient and consistent.........and keep your eye on them when they are free roaming the house, they can be sneaky sometimes before they get the "complete" picture. lol

Bringing the poop to wear you want them to poop at like puppy pads was something I thought would work(though a bit disgusting, especially because he tries to mess with it). Until the following day when Chico pooped on the floor. So now I'm going "back to the drawing board."

Default peeing outside

We have just recently got our 2nd yorkie. She was very distracted when we would take her outside with our older yorkie, so we built a separate fenced in area and put a mesh netting on top (to protect her from hawks stealing her). This has helped tremendously because she knows that she is only put in this area to go potty and when we set her in the fenced in area we tell her to go potty over & over until she goes and then lots of praise. Then we tell her "let's go get a treat". She only gets treats if she potty's outside. She is also getting very good at using her potty pads. I keep one right by the back door just in case we don't see her standing at the door. She won't stand at the door very long so you really have to watch her. When we see her standing at the door we also ask her if she needs to go potty.
