Default Leash Training--need advice

Hi,

Any tips on training my 4 month old puppy on the leash/harness? When I put the leash/harness combo on he just sits there. Ive tried luring him with treats and telling him to come but he will only get the treat then sit again. I know its something Im not doing because he follows me everywhere in the house.

Have you tried just putting the leash on and letting him drag it around the house? That way he will get used to it.

Let him drag his leash around the house for a few days under supervision. It takes time to get them used to something going around them. Next, get a toy, hold his leash in one hand and toy the other. Shake the toy in front of him and get him to follow it with his leash on. After doing it a couple of times a few days, you can then try it outside. He will eventually get used to it.

Does he do that when You take him outside too. When Chachi first started on the leash he would do that inside too but once I took him outside he walked. After taking him out a couple of times he quit doing it

I have two 4month olds and it can be a slow process. I work with them everyday. First put the harness on a few minutes everyday give treats and praise then only after he is use to it move on to the next step. Next let him drag the lease. Just do everything in babysteps and try to make it fun. With my two - Now Pinky is great at the walk and Princeton her brother wants to be held. I am just going very slow with him and call his name with treats in my hand. Eventually we will get there and so will you. It is time and patience and sometimes moving back a step.

Are you talking about the leather leash/harness combo? Those don't look very comfortable. Try buying a nylon or soft harness and letting your pup wear that. He may not move for a while but put some chicken or treats on the floor a few feet away and he will move! Then let him drag the leash around. When you walk, give him a treat every few feet until he gets the hang of it.

I tried that last night and put his food on the floor in random spots. It worked, so I guess I will have to take it one day at a time!

Thank you everyone for all of your suggestions! I know Im repeating myself but I guess I didnt read all of the responses.

I worked with him last night. I had treats in my hand and a toy. Then I put food on the floor in random spots, that helped. We ended up walking around from room to room! I will keep trying with him every day. He's a smart little guy, Im sure he will get the hang of it!
