I HAVE HAD MY YORKIE FOR 3 WEEKS AND IM STARTING TO GET FUSTRATED. HE IS 12 WEEKS OLD. HE WONT PEE OUTSIDE, I HAVE BEEN WITH HIM OUTSIDE FOR OVER AN HOUR AND HE WONT PEE/POO. BUT IN LESS THAN 10 SECONDS COMING INTO THE HOUSE HE PEES... I HAVE BEEN TELLING HIM NO EVERY TIME HE DOES IT. I ALSO HAVE TRAINING PADS AND I PLACE HIM ON THERE BUT HE DOESNT PAY ATTENTION TO THEM. .. . HE PEES EVERYWHERE NOT EVEN IN A SPECIFIC SPOT. LATELY I HAVE BEEN LOCKING HIM UP AS A PUNISHMENT WHEN HE PEES BECAUSE JUST SAYING NO WASNT WORKING( SORT OF LIKE A TIME OUT) .. BUT THIS ISNT WORKING EITHER...OUR FAMILY WOULD LOVE TO PLAY WITH HIM INSIDE BUT WE CANT CAUSE HE PEES. , PLEASE I NEED HELP.. HE WONT PEE ON PADS OR OUTSIDE HE ONLY DOES IT ON THE FLOOR....ALSO WHEN THE PUPPY PEES WHAT SHOULD I DO? IS LOCKING HIM UP OK. Have you tried crate training him? What I do is I put him in a crate for 3-4hours. I later pick him up and take him outside where there are grass he could run around and then pee in. It works! As soon as he eliminates, praise praise praise him. Hope that helps.

How old is your puppy?

First of all he is very young, and should not be allowed to run free in the entire house. You can confine him to a kitchen or use an ex pen. It takes a lot of time and patience to train them.

Second, He is not peeing outside because he has no idea what he is supposed to be doing. He is not being naughty, it's just like a baby, he doesn't understand.

When I trained mine to Pee pads, I kept them confined to the kitchen, I would put the pads wherever they peed, they had several favorite spots. Whe the got so they were always using the pads, i started todf move the pads all toward one area, I moved them just a little bit each day, untill I was able to eliminate 1 and then another and finally all but one of them were gone.

They would still occasionally have mistakes but 90% of the time the went on the pads. As the got older, they got better.

The third thing is, dogs do not understand time out. If you catch him in the act of peeing on the floor, scold him instantly, if you didn't see him do it, don't bother scolding because he will have no idea why you are yelling. They do not understand the human language.

If you see him peeing on the pad praise him instantly, there again don't come along later and tell him he was a good dog for peeing on the pad, it has to be instantly.

Patience patience patience, and a ton of common sense. He wants to please you, you have to help him to succeed.

MY PUPPY IS TWELVE WEEKS OLD. I BOUGHT A CRATE AND THE FIRST FEW DAYS I TRIED PUTTING HIM IN IT AND HE WILL CRY & SCREAM SO BAD LIKE IF I WAS HURTING HIM.. I THINK HE IS TRAMAUTIZED FROM THE PUPPY STORE HE WAS IN BEFORE I BOUGHT HIM. I DO HAVE A SMALL BUT COMFTORABLE SPACE FOR HIM.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE I THINK MY BIG MISTAKE WAS THAT I WOULD LEAVE HIM AROUND THE HOUSE.
HE IS MY FIRST DOG AND I AM NEW TO THIS AND THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE, I NEEDED IT.

At that age, I put a bellyband on my pup and let him run and play all over the house.

I didn't even try to pee pad train, etc.

From the get-go.... I took my pup outside every couple hours to pee (summer and winter). And, of course, with his bellyband on - if he had an accident in the house - he didn't do any damage.

I think the one thing that got him going as far as peeing outside.....was his being able to smell where my other dog had pee'd. Everytime he smelled where he had pee'd earlier or where my other dog had pee'd --- he'd pee.
Without this - I'm not sure he would have learned to pee outside so quickly.

*** I don't think a bellyband should keep you from house training your pup. You just need to be faithful in taking the bellyband off and taking him outside often...

I don't know about you - but I really don't think I house trained my dog. I think I house trained me. I am the one who is trained to go outside every couple hours. If I do this - my dog never pees in the house - and, if I don't - he will. So which one of us is really trained? Guess it doesn't really matter. Whatever works - right!

PS: I work - and when I go to work, I leave my Yorkie confined to the kitchen/laundry room. When he was a pup, I did leave a pee pad in there, but he ripped it to shreds every day. Today - he's older - used to peeing outside and can hold it longer - I could count on one hand the number of times he has pee'd in the kitchen in the last six months. He almost never pees when I gone (for 6 or 7 hours). And - he never pees during the night. But, I do take him out first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

Your dog is mighty young still. And also you haven't had him long enough to be housetrained. It takes some 6 months, with their little bladders to get trained. I'd definitely not let him have run of the entire house!

They do get used to their crate and its a den for them later. But if your crating, need to make sure you take them out every 2 hours or so. And keep the crate in the busiest room in the house. I'd certainly crate at night. I had to put Venus's crate beside my bed, so I could hear her cry to go "out". She got used to the crate beside the bed, and eventually when I'd say "lets go to bed" she'd go get in her crate.

But I would not use the crate for punishment. Especially if you don't see them going somewhere, and catch them in the act. When you catch them in the act, just say "no" and put them on the pee pad, or take them outside. I know a pee pad worked better for me at first than outside.

I got an x pen, and put her crate toys, food and water on one end and a pee pad at the other end. After she was going on the pad all the time, I confined her to the kitchen, with a pad in there. When confining or crating, you want to use the busiest room in the house, so they won't get lonely! That certainly keeps the whining down! When she was 100% in the kitchen, I added 1 more room. Now carpet is harder to train them on than lenolium or tile!! Venus is 6 months old, and my carpet cleaner is still "parked" in the living room! And she still misses the pad with the poo a lot!

Also if you don't get the smell out of carpet, they will keep going in that same spot! From my experience it takes more than a carpet cleaner. I'm now trying "Simple Solutions". You can get that at Petsmart.

Ok, the first thing I would do is get and x-pen to designate the "potty" area in the yard. I would go to Petco or PetsMart and buy some spray that you spray on the grass (it smells like urine) to get a puppy to go.

So, I would spray the x-pened area grass with the urine spray and keep the puppy in the area and keep repeating "go potty" and let him smell the urine spray and it should stimulate him to go. As soon as he goes, praise him and give him a treat and let him outside the x-pen as a reward and he gets play time. He will soon learn he has to potty before he gets free play time. Confining him to a specific area will keep him focused on the task at hand.

I would do this every hour on the hour, because I puppy that small has to go about that much. As soon as you are done playing with him, he should be taken back outside for another potty break or placed in his "safe" place in your house where his bed is and it should also be x-pened or blocked off. When he wakes up, out to the grassy potty area again. Keep repeating the "go potty" demand and praise and reward when he has done his business. It should take him no time to get the idea of what you want. But understand it will be many more months before he actually will "ask" to go out for potty on his own, so you will need to watch him like a hawk and like others have said "No free roam of the house" until he is reliably housebroken.

If you cannot afford 2 x-pens, then leash him when you take him outside, spray the area you are at and don't move, just let him walk around but only within the reach of the leash and keep repeating "go potty" and do the rest as described above.
