Default Getting another Yorkie....

I have recently been thinking about getting another Yorkie. Gracie is 2 years old and I think I finally have the time for another one. I know quite a few of you have 2 or more Yorkies and was wondering how hard is it for them to adapt to one another??? And how do you go about training the new puppy...do you allow him or her to interact right away with your older Yorkie???

Any advice would be appreciated!!!

Shandy

Don't have a clue as to what to tell you but Jaden is two and I'm looking for another one myself as a playmate for him so I would be interested in hearing the answers for this thread too!

I also am looking for a 2nd Yorkie and my 3rd dog. I do worry Cali will be jealous but Maya adjusted to Cali when I got her last year.

Snickers was 1 year old when we brought Baxter home (at 12 weeks). We introduced them slowly and Baxter being the new baby didn't really understand what was going on. Snickers was agitated at first, running up to Baxter and barking, posturing, and basically showing superiority.

It took about two weeks for Snickers to adjust. We always supervised them together, and kept Baxter crated when we couldn't give 100% attention. But after about two weeks, things really calmed down and the turning point came when we saw the two of them sleeping side by side on their pillow. They are now best pals!

It's important to give the older dog the same amount of attention he always got. And also put him first when giving treats, feeding, going out, etc. This reinforces his position as the dominant one.

Good luck!

Question

We've been talking about the same thing! Our Mia is 9 months old... We were wondering if it was too soon. I'd like to hear how old everyone's Yorkies were when they got the 2nd one.

I don't want to wait to long if I do get another... I think if your in puppy mode now is the time to do it! Any thoughts? I am thinking my hubby will be game for it by the spring~!

i started with one baby, then two or three months later got an adult dog and just set her down in the room with him. it was harder on her than him. She got on the back of the couch for two or three days then finally became part of the family. didn't affect her eating or anything. She just wasn't social. Then two or three months after that, I got a third baby. I did the same thing. Just put her on the floor and they took off playing right away but the first baby was a little jealous when she was in my lap. THEN, this summer i got two more adults and they fit right in. One big happy family. One bad thing tho. The second baby more or less potty trained herself to the pee pads because that's where the others go. When one of them starts having "accidents" they all do. It is a lot of work and there are days I work with my room and my dogs all day.

I totally agree that if you are already in 'puppy mode', it makes it a lot easier. The house is set up for a puppy already, you have everything you need, etc., and the pups will grow up together. It sounds like 7 1/2 months is just the right time.

I don't have two yorkies, but I have a yorkie, chi and a pom and love having 3. I wouldn't let a new pup near your other dog until he has been to the vet and gets clean bill of health. Then only let them play together when you can supervise, until the pup is bigger. It really isn't any more difficult with 3 than it is 1 to me, they all eat together, go out together and even sleep at the same time. I guess living together gets them on the same schedule. My puppy does have her own area by herself in the kitchen where the other two can't reach her for when she needs time alone, at least until she is completely housebroken.

I woulld try to find an adult first and if you cant get a pup. I am sure your female will like her new playmate either way

I had Adonis 5 years before adding Venus (she was 10 weeks when I got her) to our home.

I just made sure Adonis still came first in everything. First for treats, first for food and all other stuff. I made over him first, then her. He never once got jealous, just the opposite!

He took to her like glue! Loved to run and try to make her chase him! OMG, I wished so bad I'd got her many years ago for him to play with! It brought so much joy to his life having her to play with, and I thought his playing days were gone!
