My 1 year old yorkie mix is 12 pounds. He is giving us the biggest problem with the crate. He always uses the restroom in there. It is small enough for him to just lay down and turn around. We thought that maybe he uses the restroom to come out of the crate, so a trainer gave us an idea on when he uses the restroom in his crate to simply ignore and move to another crate. So what hes thinking is whewn i go in this i crate i am just goin to go into another crate. That method didnt work for us. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution? Also, even when his bed is in the crate he will go on that too. I always clean the crate with simple solution cleaning solution and let it soak into the crat pan for 15 to 20 minutes, so im pretty sure all the urine smell gets out of their. Also he does get out quite a lot throughout the day and i some times he might go outside and we will bring him back in and place him in the crate and go again. Please help me because today i actually thought he was learning but he went in the crate 3 times today. My mom keeps knagging on me to get rid of him but i told her it's not that simple and i will not get rid of him even if he is like that for the rest of his life. So please any methods that worked for you guys with crates and your dog goin to the restroom in thier would be highly appreciated. My dog is also not housetrained! Thanks for all your help

I am confused...are you saying that he messes in his crate and a trainer told you to put him in a different crate? You said that he goes to the bathroom outside and then you put him back in his crate? How long are you leaving him in his crate? Do you leave him in the crate all day? Yorkies are not known for being the easiest little ones to train....I have a 5 month old...the only time she is in her crate is when she goes to bed for the night...I ALWAYS put her on her pee pad before she goes in her crate...she has never had an accident...If I have to go out during the day I put her in a baby playpen...she has her food, water, a bed, and a pee pad.....

I apologize for all the questions but, I am having a difficult time trying to understand what you are saying...sorry

Yea I would have to say that all of that sounds a little confusing. To me it sounds like he is in the create all the time!?! We used a create for Joey for a while, then for one night I let him sleep on the bed and he has been there ever since! But when he used a create he never went to the bathroom in it....

What you are saying is very confusing and I have never heard of a method like that. Crate to crate?

That is what I got out of it too.

Why is your dog in the crate so much? Maybe you should keep him in an ex-pen or penned in the kitchen.

I can't imagine that the dog is enjoying life, or that you are enjoying the dog if it is always penned up.

Maybe a cat would be a better choice of pet for you.

It could be that your dog is not housetrained because he has spent his entire life in a crate, and has never been giving the chance to learn.

I'd pee in my crate too if it was my only chance of getting let out.

If your mother had kept you locked in a closet all your life, you probably would not be house trained either.

I normally try to discourage people from rehoming their dogs, but in this case, i agree with your mother.

ok, im sorry for the confusing post. My dog is NOT in the crate all the time. The most he will be in there for is three hours besides overnight.Every morning i let him outsideand he will pee and sometimes poop. Then i have to leave for school and i place him in the crate. Sometimes when i place him in the crate he will go in there 5 minutes after he just went outside. So what the trainer told me to do is when he messes in one crate to place him in another crate so that he thinks "if im going in my crate i am just going to be moved into another crate". She said the reason fo rthis is because he may think that if he messes in the crate then he will come out. ( because this is what usually happenes, he messes in the vrate and then comes out to get cleaned and get his crate cleaned. So, his day in the crate is only about 2 hours long because my mom takes him out while im in school and then leaves for work. Then i come home and take him out and then he stay about the house. But sometimes when i do need to place him in the crate he will go in there which is the main problem for me. Is their a alternative to the crate to help with house breaking him outside?

also i would never leave one of my pets in a cage for a long period of time. I feel that his cruel for the helpless animal. So i dont want anybody to get the wrong idea. I spend most of my day with my dog socializing him. I take him to the pet store so ican get him better socialized with dogs becuase he had a bad experience their with another dog and is now scared. I care very much about my dog and once again dont want anybody to get the wrong idea. Im sorry if my post was confusing and thats my fault if you guys did get the wrong idea!

I agree with Lovedorkyyorkie....I just read some of your posts and I too think you should rehome him...sounds to me like you keep him crated WAY to long...He shouldn't be kept in a crate for a long length of time..sounds to me like he's in the crate more than he's out...JMO but, I would get a cat like another member had mentioned...this way you don't have to worry about crating and cats are easy to train...and PLEASE...PLEASE DON'T BREED! If you think you have issues now..wait till you have puppies running and pooping all over...and not to mention all the work and cash it will cost.

Our male yorkie has a bad habit of marking his "territory". Is your dog neutered? It might help if he were. It might just be something you are going to have to get used to. Good luck.

yes i did nueter him and i do not crate my dog for long periods of time. Like i said earlier he is only in there for about 2 - 3 hours during the day and when we cant keep a close eye on him. I can see from my posts how you may have figured that, and i dont think i should rehome him because he is out all day. everywhere i go he is with me. TO my friends house, in the car, to the pets store, everywhere, i just would like it if i dont get people to tell me to rehome my boy because he is only one dog and he is our baby. Like i said he is not crated for long periods of time it just that he uses the restroom in the crate. We dont know why, he just seems to think it's the bathroom!

That would be the part I don't understand. In all of the books I have read, they say that a dog won't use it's bed as a bathroom UNLESS they are there for TOO long.
