Deter and Poop Eating Question - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Ugh!! My darling baby (2.5 months old) is eating his own poop (we have no other pets)!! I tried Accent - didn't really help - although he seems more to just nibble play with "it" than actually eat it. I can't tell you how much this grosses us all out. No one wants anything to do with him after this<shudder>!!!

My question is the Deter says one tablet a day for every 10 lbs. Tucker is between 2-3 lbs. Should I just give him half a tablet or is it safe enough to give the whole thing? I guess after treatment, I need to let him taste his poop to know that it tastes bad, huh?<big shudder>!!

We use a pen with a pee pad/litter box at one end and his bed and toys at the other end. Most of the time I am around to quickly remove poop, but every once in a while he does it when I'm not around to remove it in time. He bring the poop out of his box and bring it to his bed to play with/nibble. I guess crate training is an option, but other than this issue, the play pen is working so well!!

I really need this discusting habit to stop.

It's very common - and you should be able to stop this habit while he's still young. This topic has been discussed at great length on here - I did a search, here's a link to other posts - including solutions that have WORKED for others on here.

Thanks, yes I've read and read. Seems like it is not a very easy problem to resolve. My main question was on the dose of deter based on weight. I went ahead and gave him a full pill since the box said if the regular dose didn't help, double it.

He loved the pill.

Funny thing was, I was just out at the stable where we board our horse and I was giving her some play time in the arena since the weather is nasty today and she won't be turned out and she decides to eat some other horses left behind manure. Aaacckkk!! I have never seen her do this before!! Both the horse and the puppy are fed high quality feeds!! I think they are just doing it to see the look of sheer horror on my face, LOL!!!

My little boy did this also. I used the Deter and it worked great. Now he doesn't eat his any more. But I did catch him out in the yard eating deer nuggets that were left behind. Good luck, it is a gross habit.

It's the grossest thing ever! Me and my boyfriend call Banks a sh*teater...yuck! Oddly enough, he doesn't seem very interested in his own poop (though we're training him to go outside and he doesn't get much time to 'examine' it) but he IS very interesting in eating the poop of other dogs...even more disgusting!! Someone told me that it's because there are nutirients in dog poo and the dogs can tell?! I think it might be a load of crap, but thought I'd pass along the info anyway.

Well, Jerome eats both other dogs and his own. I have to keep a close eye at him when taking him for walks.

Brandi is 9 1/2 months old and still eats her poop......after using an entire box of 90 deter......good luck.....it just makes me GAG

My yorkies have always been very fond of horse manure. I have no idea why. Usually they will outgrow eating their own poop, but they never seem to outgrow their taste for hore manure.

i've done many, many searches on here try "Poo eating" and you'll see the many, many recommendations from pineapples to meat tenderizer... so far nothing works for my tinkerbell and I gave up, i'll have to try the deter, I guess. It is SO, SO gross, and Mine does the same thing, we find little suprises in her bedding -and all this time, i thought they didnt want that stuff in their beds- yuck.
mine is a mess and the same thing with my daughter, no one wants to hold her or help me with her, after she's had a snack on it.

i think some dogs are just weird. My vet said she might grow out of it, but a lot of dogs just do this

I am in the club too! Mine are now 2 years old

...and yes they still eat their poop.

I have tried everything!
ACCENT
FORBID
DETER
Pineapples
Spinach
Zucchini
Hot sauce on and in the poop
Horseradish on and in the poop
Shaking coins in the can

It has been a loosing battle all this while. The only good thing is, now that they are older, they seem to poop only 2x (each). So, now I try to get them both to poop in the morning before I leave. Sometimes they both will and yay for me - I get to flush 2 poops. BUT, most of the time only 1 or NONE will poop before I leave, so you know they are snacking on that while I am at work. The evening poops I usually do get!

When I am able to 'get' the poop. I make such a big deal, how good they are for pooping and leaving it alone. They come with me to flush it and then off to the kitchen for a special treat.

One last resort I am trying is the Anise Seed. I had read here on YT that someone feed their dog 1 seed a day and after about two weeks the dog stopped. I have crazy thoughts about that seed getting stuck in their digestive tract and causing an infection. So I took a whole bunch of seeds and put them in a bagging and hammered the hell out of it, so it is like dust that I sprinkle on the AM and PM food. So far it has only been a couple of days, but I will continue on with it and see what happens.

My Mattie, 11 weeks old, is also a poop eater

While at the Vets 2 weeks ago I asked them about this. He said that this is a Terrior trade and that hopefully they out grow it. The best advise he gave me was to scold him when he was caught in the act. So we have been leaving his poop on the wee wee pads for just a few minutes afterward to see what he does. If he goes for it we yell at him and tell him NO NO..... and that has been helping. Good luck.

our first yorkie would eat her poop, we have had 2 more since then that didnt, we tried for a year to get her to quit but finally just gave and had to sell her(we had just had our son born at that time)
nasty and horrible breath- good luck
