I don't understand how belly bands can aid in house training. Can someone fill me in? thanks

Belly bands don't aid in house training at all.

They have nothing to do with training - but are simply used to keep your dog from peeing on your carpet, etc., and doing damage.

My dog wears a belly band in the evenings and during the night. He is almost always totally dry in the morning -- so he is wearing it "just in case."

But he will pee in the house in the evening if I don't get him out in time. So, this is for sure the time I want him wearing one.

**When he is wearing a belling band - I check him often - and change it if it is even the slightest bit damp.

BUT - believe me - his wearing a belly band - certainly does nothing as far as training goes.....

**** Good luck!

I am not sure if it is for training or not, it is mainly for preventing an accident. However, I did train my boys by using a bellyband. First of all, they woulden't hold it for anything. But when I put the bellybands on them, they learned to hold it because they hated being wet. So now they can sleep at night with no worries of them having an accident from them not wanting to hold it. I also started off by putting the bellybands on them all the time. Then I left them off for a whole day and if they had an accident, they wore the bellybands for the rest of the day, only taking them off to relieve themselves, and they would wear them the next day too. So after repeating this several times they learned that if they don't have an accident, they don't get the bellyband on them, they are free of the bellyband. If they have an accident, we start over and they get to wear the bellyband.

As you can guess, they don't like wearing the bellybands, the don't try to get them off or anything, they just don't like it and prefer not to have it on. So now, I don't even need to use a bellyband, they learned that if they are good and don't have an accident then they don't have to wear that bellyband that they hate to wear. They haven't had a bellyband on for a long time now. I do of course make them wear it when we go over to someone else's house, I don't want any chance of them having an accident of feeling the need to mark their terriortory.

So I guess it can be used as a training tool in this aspect, it sure worked wonders for my boys and trained them.

I only use a belly band on Timmy when we go out to visit someone or to Petsmart.

How old is Mason? I just noticed Timmy lifting his leg up againt the trash can last night. He is 8 1/2 months old now. Most of the time he will squat on the pad but I caught him lifting his leg up last night. I know that if he continues to do this he will have to wear a belly band while in the house.

My Joey is over 2 years old and wears a band at all times, unless outside of course. I, too, change him at the slightest dampness and use baby wipes when changing.

My pup wears his belly band - to keep him from peeing where he shouldn't.
But - it has never really helped to train him.

When my dog pees with his belly band on (whenever) ------ all at once I have this little guy beside me - looking up and me whinning. You guessed it! He's wet and he doesn't like it. So I reach down and feel it - and sure enough, it's wet and its "warm"---meaning he just pee'd.

I always say, "Murphy! You're supposed to come and get me BEFORE you pee - not AFTER." But, he has yet to ever do this.

And - if he were't wearing it (especially in the evening around here) - he'd just pee wherever he wants.

*** I did mention earlier that he goes all day without peeing when I'm at work(when he's confined to a large kitchen area) - and he goes all night - sometimes 8 or 9 hours without peeing.

Go figure!!!!!!
