Dog New to Crate Training

I have two Yorkies. A little boy and a little girl. I have had the little girl, Sadie, for over a year now and the little boy, Alfie, for 2 months. Sadie is 9 and Alfie is between 10 and 13. They are both rescue dogs. We have tried everything with Sadie to potty train her. She uses both pee pads or paper at night and when we're out but most of the time opts to using the floor. Alfie scent marks everwhere. We have just started crating them as a final resort as we weren't keen on the idea. Last night was the first time they spent the night in their crates. I was wandering how long do they have to be crated for? Is it now for the rest of their lives or do we stop doing it after an amount of time?

Alfie isn't castrated. We can't castrate him because he has congestive heart disease and the vet said we can't risk operating on him.

Okay this is what I have been doing and it is working on my pup, at the beginning crating wasn't helping, she was scared and would poo in there so now she only uses her kennle to sleep in and that is it so she knows when she goes in there its time for her to go to sleep. We also have an xpen, I only put her in there when I am cleaning the floors, doing dishes, etc just long enough for me to gets things done. She has 2 pee pads on one end and some toys and if she is in there for awhile her bed on the other end. If we are gone anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours we leave her xpen gate open so if she needs to go potty or poo she goes in there and uses the pee pads, she has free roam of the family room and kitchen combo. We use a baby gate to block off the other part of the house. I always make sure there is nothing
laying on the floors like wires or just anything that may hurt her, I always leave a light on and the TV on for her, her food she knows where it is, it has never been moved. When we first got the xpen I would put her in there when we would be gone but we would come home, she would be a mess with poop stuck on her coat, paws just a mess and thats with her going on the pee pads but being confined to just that area she would walk all over it
and step on it. So we decided to just give her free roam because thats what she is use to when we are there. We have only had her for over 2 weeks and she is about 90% house trained. Everyone has different methods of training there pets its really what they like. Hope this helps some.

Default I’m new at this too!

I’m new at this too. I have been reading up and asking the pet stores a lot of questions but here is what we have been doing.

I have a crate that is wire to she can see thru it and it is divided so that she only has room to turn around. I keep Irie, my 11 week old girl, in her crate at night and keep her crate right by my bed. Dogs are very clean animals and prefer not to lie in the waste. Every time she needs to eliminate she starts to wine and it wakes us up. We take her out; she does her business, and then goes back into her crate and right to sleep. The first night she woke us up every 2 hours and now we are up to 4 hours (it’s been 8 days). It seems to be working. I plan on crating at night and when she sleeps until she can at least hold it for the whole night. I won’t give her free roam of the house ever. Too much stuff she can get into and too many places she might pee. I know too many people who think their dog is house broken but probably have no idea the places the pee… I just prefer to watch her closely while she is a pup so she is safe and so every time I think she is going to pee I can run her outside. During the day she goes out about every 2 hours and after meals (right now my Dad watches her Mon- Fri so I am very lucky for that). Like I said I am new at this but I this seems to be working for us. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, we also reward her every time she eliminates outside and play with her for a min after. If she eliminates inside, which hasn't been that much, We take her outside for a min and then she goes back in her crate. We wait about 5-10 min and take her outside again. And we haven't had in accidents in her crate yet! Not even at night
