Sleep Deprived HELP!!!!!! - YorkieTalk.com Forums

2:00 AM, that is what time Tobie decided we needed to wake up. I have tried the can and it does not work. We have put him in our room, put his crate in his favorite spot, etc. My husband was looking at bark collars in his Cabela's catalog this morning. I do not want to get one of those things and it not even work on him. Any other suggestions??

Try wrapping his crate up with a blanket or a towel, so that he cannot see out of it. This has worked for us. Millie seemed to settle down better when she was coccooned.

Perhaps it's the crate that he's objecting to? What if you shut him in a bathroom or laundry room (whichever is further from your bedroom)? Cover it in newspaper to make for easier cleanup. Then, put a fan in your room & turn it on high to drown him out and ignore him.

If you must go with adversives, please try one of the things that makes a noise when he barks or a spray collar. I'd really hate to see you use a shock collar (especially on a dog who apparently has already been abused).

Is something outside waking him up? We live in a townhome and our neighbor works late hours and Loki always barks when he comes home. Maybe put his crate in a closet or room with no windows and cover his crate? How old is Tobie? Does he just need to go outside? Loki didn't sleep through the night until he was at least 8 months old - sometimes we still need a late night potty break.

Another thing to try is really wearing him out, like doggy daycare. Loki sleeps better on weekend when we are home all day to wear him out than during the week when he sleeps all day. So once a week he goes to daycare and the big dogs wear him out. Or maybe adjust bed time or don't allow naps after a certain time like you would with a kid. We used to say "no naps after 7pm" because then 11pm was playtime, or so he thought. Now he's turned into a teenager and sleeps all the time

did you ever try putting the crate next to your bed and when Tobie starts barking just put your hand in the crate so he knows your right there...Thats what I used to do with Lady when we first got her and she always quieted down

I know he is objecting to the crate. The only reason I am crating him is because he is not house broken. I am thinking about just getting him some diapers for night time accidents and letting him sleep with his mommy (my 14 year old daughter). I can't have him doing his business all over my house.

Tobie is between 2 and 3 years old, we aren't quiet sure. I wish we had a doggie daycare out here, I live in the rural south.

He started out by the bed but he kept us up all night. At least in the living room we could turn the TV on in our bedroom and it would drown him out.

A friend of mine looked into the bark collar and she said she found out it can kill or injure a very small dog!!! Just thought you might want to check this out to be sure before you do something like that!!!!

I was told you should not use a shock collar on any dogs under eight pounds.

Trust me I have been researching. Tobie weighs 8 lbs and is a very robust little boy. I have talked to my dad at great lengths and he has given me some recommendations as far as collars go. He has worked in veterinary care for over 32 years and I know he would never tell me to do anything that would harm our new baby. I DO NOT want to do this to him, he is such a sweet boy. I am going to exercise any and all options before I resort to the collar.

Tobie had a much better night. I put him in his crate and he barked for maybe a minute and then went to sleep. I did not hear him at all until I got up to let him out this AM. I hope he is beginning to feel secure and is starting to realize that he is home for good. I put an old, large towel in his crate with him instead of an old shirt, maybe that was the key.
