Dog Doggy School!

My little Tony starts Doggy School on the 26th! I am so excited! It is being held by a German Sheppard breeder, oh my! My little Tony will be whipped into shape pretty quick!
I did have a question tho:
What is the average price that anyone that has put their dog through training has paid.
She is charging $100 for seven sessions an hour a piece for a group.
She does have this other option tho where she keeps your little one for two weeks for $45 a day and when you get your pup back, he is guranteed perfect. Very tempting, but very expensive, I think it comes to $630 for the two weeks.

Love some imput!
Thanks guys, I know I can always count on y'all!

We pay $120 for an 8 week class. She has a masters degree in animal behavior and is a certified pet dog trainer, so I think that price is reasonable!

Be careful with the German Shepherd Dog trainers - they tend to use choke/prong collars and punishment and correction methods. Not all are like that though. Many have embraced positive training. I would just ask a lot of questions and observe a class before hand if possible! Don't be afraid to walk out if you don't like what you hear.

I would be skeptical of anything guaranteed. It takes a lot of time and practice to make your dog "perfect" My trainers dogs are wonderful and are what I would consider "perfect" but they are all older dogs who have been practicing for years. Yorkies are terriers and it takes a lot of practice to get and keep their attention. I would also be concerned about what techniques the trainer uses when you are not present, like leash pop corrections or whatever.

I paid $120 for 10 weeks of class. Much of the training is training us how to work with our dogs. Well worth it. Good luck!

Default thanks for the tips!

I spoke w/ I think her assistant and she said that they do not require prong/choke collars. She said to just come in what he is most comefortable with. If she is a reputable breeder (she also does the training classes at my local PetCo) I don't think that she would do anything unreasonable w/them when their owners aren't present.
Thanks for the advice.
I AM SOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!

I would still be careful. My trainer doesn't allow choke collars even if someone wanted to use one. If they want you to do leash corrections I would run the other way. It can make problems worse and it's painful for your dog.

I really hope all goes well. We liked our first class so much we did about 5 more!!! Canine Good Citizen was the most fun. Training classes are a good way to spend time with your dog and have him totally focused you and and on learning new things!

Default is local trainer expensive?

I live in very rual West Tennessee - about an hours drive from any metro area. There's a lady about 20 miles from me that offers private lessons...for $225 for 6 lessons at the dogs pace (once the first lesson is mastered, then on to the next lesson). Is this expensive? I will take Jasper to her for each lesson. She's listed on the AKC trainers page...I'll find out before I enroll to see what her certifications are. My friend took her English Sheep dog to group lessons with her (for quite a bit less) and they were successful with the training. Group lessons are not an option at this time and she suggests we start as soon as I get my baby...when he is 12 weeks old.

Would love your opinion...

I am going to classes held by our local kennel club and they charfge $4 a session for non members. When I become a member it will be $3.

No way would I turn my baby over to anyone for two weeks. That would kill me.

Oh, honey, I hate to burst your bubble, but that simply isn't true. Erin is right. YOu have to be very careful. There are alot of trainers out there who use physical force and corrections to get dogs to "behave". Unfortunately, the dog's owners are unaware that positive trainer works equally well. They believe trainers when they say that they must do this or they must do that.

Dogs suffer so much cruelty in the name of training. Ask me how I know. I've been guilty myself before I found positive methods and I feel horrible about it. But, never again!

I'm excited for you! Classes are so much fun. Like Erin, I started out with a puppy socialization class and haven't stopped yet. It's a great bonding experience for Joey and I.

That sounds like a deal to me! But I would give you the same warnings. Be careful, ask for references, don't be afraid to walk out (or show her the door) if you don't like what she says.
