Litter Box Filler- anything other than litter?

Hi, this might be a weird question, but does anyone use something beside litter or pee pads inside the litter box? I live in an apartment, and I would like to train my pup to go in a litter box on the balcony. This problem is, it is not covered, so it would get rained on. I was thinking of drilling some holes in the bottom of the box, but just wondered what would work best inside the box, something that would not seep through the holes. Any ideas? Any input would be appreciated.

Why not make your own little piece of yard for your pup by drilling the drain holes (small ones) and then adding a few inches of topsoil and planting grass seed? It would easy enough to maintain with some garden scissors and you wouldn't need to worry about replacing it.

i was just thinking about this the other day,,, i might do that, but put
sand from the beach inside there... everytime i take lexi to the beach, the minute her paws hit the sand she pees.... amazing...!!!

This is a great idea in case you plan on moving. The smell and feel of the place dogs do their thing is very important to them. If he gets used to grass now, it will be easy to transition to a yard later!

If that's too much maintnance, try mulch. Loki will pee in the mulch if there is no grass available (like in a parking lot). At least that's also something you only find outside and he won't mistake the bath mat for it :-)

Lexi, I like the idea of sand. We live by the beach and Chewy doesn't have any problem going on sand, but, I know that rain would fill the box without holes and I'm afraid if I put holes in the box the sand would seep out. Any suggestions? Thanks for the ideas thus far, please keep them coming!!

I think they have covered litter boxes which might keep the rain out, but it depends on the size of your dog. Or, what about a child's sandbox with a cover? You could even put sand in it or plant grass in it like someone else suggested.
