I am getting so frustrated! Louie is almost 8 months old and not making any progress with housetraining. I have been training him to go outside, and I just don't know what to do anymore. Most of the time he will hold the pee pee for outside, but he just feels free to poop anywhere in the house. He is so sneaky about it that I almost never catch him. He will wait for me to go to the bathroom or go into the kitchen to put up a plate and as soon as i'm out of sight he has an accident. Sometimes he will even go behind furniture where I can't see. I only let him out of sight for 2 seconds and that's all it takes. I just don't know how to make him understand that poop goes outside too. I try to give him plenty of outside time sometimes even up to 30min., but he is much more interested in barking at everything. I have to make him understand that he can only go outside. Wee wee pads are not an option because I have 4 roomates, and they think it's gross.(but so is dog poo on the floor) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. How do you guys keep an eye on your little ones 24/7. Sorry this is so long. I just needed to vent.

I put Mia in a crate when I am not watching her. But I spend a lot of time with her. When she gets in the crate it's usually her nap time anyway, so she just goes to sleep.
Mia usually goes pee pee and potty the first thing when she wakes up in the morning. I take her out of her crate and without putting her on the floor once, I walk outside carrying her on my lap. She goes pee pee and potty right away. If your dog goes the first thing when he wakes up, just take him outside and give him treats and lots of praise when he goes pee pee and potty. That might be a good start to get him to understand how things are supposed to work.

Do you know his potty habits? Chance is 8 months old and I know without a doubt he has to poo first thing in the morning. If you take him out first thing and he does not poo do not let him out of your sight or confine him until he goes poo.

I would try to take him out and if he does not go confine him and try again in 15mins. Also walking stimulates them to go. Maybe you could try walking him around until he goes.

That is great that he goes wee wee outside. Chance caught on to the poo outside much faster than the wee wee outside.

Why don't you try crate training him. Tiger just got back to doing it again only because I am training Annika so she won't go crazy thinking why she is in and he isn't

Depending on how often you feed, I already pretty much know when Tiger will go. He does not give me any signal when he wants to but as soon as I walk him, he will go so I do it twice a day.

Crate training is a wonderful way to help them control their bladder. I know a lot of people might think this is cruel but it really isn't. Lots of training books will tell you so. If you are consistent, he will eventually get into a routine that will be manageable by YOU not him. Remember, train him to make it convenient for you as this will carry on as he gets older.

Loki *always* poops on a walk. I don't care if he went in the yard 2 minutes before. I always take TWO bags. Try going for a walk! Then give him a handful of treats when he goes!!!

By crate train do you mean putting him in there when I can't watch him constantly or do I also need to crate him at other specific times. Louie always goes poop first thing in the morning, but after that I can never be sure. I have tried scheduling his meals, but I can't quite regulate it. How long does it usually take your babies to go number 2 when you walk them? Louie usually needs to go after walks, but I never associated the two. It's a great idea that I will be sure to try.

my daughter came up with a good idea that seemed to work with Tootie. He did the same thing, pee pee outside, but come INSIDE to poop... she took it, and put it outside and showed it to him, he seems to grasp now that is where it belongs...
he does still forget from time to time, but mostly he goes outside now. She only did this a couple of times, and he caught on.

The experts say that housetraining yorkies is notoriously difficult and from my past experience this is true. Most people have said to crate him when you can't watch him and I totally agree. I am training Zachary to go in a litter box and he does use it although not voluntarily since he's only 10 weeks old. If a litter box with dog litter is an option you might try keeping him confined in a smaller area and try to get him to use the litter box. If he will use it then you could gradually expand the area he's allowed to be in as long as he's getting the hang of it. Also, you might try keeping him on a leash in the house so that he doesn't get too far away from you and you can monitor him more closely. It's a frustrating project for sure!

Yay, mine does the same thing and she is over a year old. Do you know today she sat right there in the livingroom staring right at me a pee'd

I could not believe it. She usually tries to hide but not today. These little dogs can be so unpredictable.

The other option besides putting him in a crate is to tether him to you (put a belt around your waist and tie his leash to it). That way you can see him at all times and catch him before he goes inappropriately.

As previously suggested, it is also a good idea to take some of his poop outside and leave it there. When you want him to go, lead him to the old poop. Dogs often stimulate themselves to defecate by smelling old feces.

Don't forget to go heavy on the positive reinforcement (treats and praise) when he does do it right!

I was just going to suggest a tether! If you are watching VERY closely they will start to sniff and squat and usually you can startle them and they will stop long enough to scoot them outside to finish.

Try crate training. It really works well for Maddie. There are alot of books to help with crate training.
