Default Not a walker!!

My Murphy is just about to turn 8 months old and I do not take him on consistent normal walks because I really do not think he likes them. I have never known a dog not to really enjoy his walks - has any one else had this problem? I would like to take him on a normal walk every morning and evening but when I do he seems to only want to walk about 8 houses down the street and than proceeds to sit on his bum and not move and refuses to go further. I have to turn around towards home and than and only than will he move. I have tried talking to him all the way through the walk and saying good boy – tried bribing him with cookies but nothing seems to get him to go past a certain point. It is not even a quarter of a mile that we walk – this is not long enough to get him used to walking is it? Also when he does walk the short distance he is all over the place - any suggestions on getting him to let me walk him not him walk me?

Have you ever tried taking him to a park or someplace that would really be fun for him to help give him the idea that walking is great fun? I've never seen one that didn't like to walk, either. In fact, if Kacee is outside and wants to go for a walk, she won't come in. She'll stand or sit there staring at me until I give in - she doesn't realize that we can't walk up the road until it's cooler because the pavement is too hot. So, we just walk around the yard at those times.

I think my Lucy just doesn't even like it outside period.... When we first put the fence up in our backyard Lucy and Tank would go outside and run and play for hours.... Now Tank still runs and plays outside and you can barley get him inside but Lucy doesn't like it. She won't go outside unless we do and even when we go outside with her then she just sits at our feet. I don't know why but I think she just likes it inside in the a/c.... maybe your pup just doesn't like it outside

Sadie wasn't a very good walker at first either. I try to take her for a walk at least every other day. She has gotten much better. She didn't want to go very far at first, I think maybe she could still see the house and felt safe?

Now all I have to say is want to go for a walk? and her ears perk up and her little brown eyes sparkle and she runs for the door. She loves her walks now. Plus she has a little boyfriend, Willy, that lives in the neighborhood! It's funny...she knows exactly where to go...she will even start to cross the road when we get close to it.!! She is so smart!LOL
Just be consistent with him....he will get used to it and go a little further every time you take him

Default I would Keep Trying

Chance learned by going to class and teaching him heal. He learned to follow my lead. Now both of my boys love walks.

Well maybe that will help him - we are about to go take a class - so lets cross our fingers! Thanks!

Your Murphy might be hurting some where. Check harness, knees, legs, ect..
My daisy does not like to walk on the road itself. but, she does great in the grass. My buddy hates to walk on wet grass so he like the road. my sissy will walk any where.
Give it time you figure it out. don't give up..
Maybe like ME I hate excerice LOL

Omg The Walk (or the drag)

My Rosie is 5 1/2 mos and I'm afraid I've spoiled her. I was told not to put a leash on her while she was too young because of the sensitive trachea. So last week I started taking her outside to walk her and she lays down and won't budge. I have tried to bribe her with her favorite treat.... nothing. I have a Cairn terrier as well.. They both play outside as often as I let them and she loves it. The Cairn LOVES to go for a walk, and ROsie usually likes whatever big sis likes. But I have tried every day to take her out and she won't budge. When we finally come back inside, she sulks and goes to her bed and give a kis or anything --- gets a real attitude. Don't wann drag her, but I want her to walk.... HELP

That post brings back memories. When Buddy was a puppy he would do
the same thing. There were many times, when crossing a street, he would
just sit down and look at me. Cars would stop until I scooped him up and
walked across with him in my arms. It takes time to get them adjusted to
the walk. Of course the smaller they are the shorter distance they will walk
at the beginning. Now he is a walking fool. After a mile I am tired and he
still wants more!

Default How To Start The Walk?

How do I get her to get started. I play the waiting game with her... Bribe... laugh and try to get her chase me... let's go with the other dog! And she is so darn stubbborn.. I tug, I tug, I encourage, I BEG!!! I don't want to make it unpleasant for her... She just won't get up. I don't want to pull her hard -- afraid I'll hurt her..

Okay I am glad I am not the only one. I feel like such a silly person dancing around trying to get Morphy to follow me. But he still just stands there looking at me like I have a big boob growing off my forhead and refuses to walk further!

Hmmmmmmmmm, I have no idea how to get them started if they don't want
to go. Bud wasn't that stubburn. I guess you just have to keep trying if
you really want them to walk. Is it too hot? Also, I use a harness never any-
thing around the neck. Must be funny to watch you trying to get him and her to
walk. Take pictures!

My Max hates walking on a leash. It seemed to come with age starting around age 2. I think it's a control issue. He loves to run loose which I let him do after he's done his business on the leash so as not to do it somewhere else like in someone's yard. We have a huge field behind our house so I walk him out there until he goes and then when he's done I let him run and he loves its! Also, if I take him somewhere new like to the beach or park then he'll walk a while but in the neighborhood...he just doesn't like it. I think some dogs just aren't into being on a leash.

We brought Punkin home at 8 months and she was like this exactly. It drove me nuts! She would pull to come home or sit and not budge staring at the direction of home.

We just kept taking her for walks - always to the same place. We encouraged a lot and gave lot's of praise and after 2 months (2 long months) she began to love her walks. She gets all excited at the word walk and we can take her on a walk anywhere without problems.

I'm not sure if we approached the problem the right way - but it seems to have worked for us.
