Confused asking for help ..... again *sigh*

Jaxon turned 9 months this week and had been doing great with the puppy pads. We added one up stairs to help with night time pees/poops since he wasn't going down the stairs on his own (until this week).

On the main level he has the laundry room with 2 pads, which has been the same for ages. No issues with pees, but he's now pooping in the diningroom, even after going outside for a walk. I've been trying to get him using the bells for going outside but no luck so far.

Any suggestions?? Do I go back to confining him to a smaller space? Punishing him? Putting a bed where he's been pooping??

Luckily 90% of the time, it's an easy pick up but really not ideal. If you have ideas or can tell me what's helped you, that would be great.

There is a lot of controversy about scolding. But I believe it's like the new discipline method for kids. It might work eventually but it requires a lot of time and patience. When it comes to kids a good wack on the bottom speeds up the process. As for dogs showing them the spot, and grab them by the back of the neck and give them a shake, with a firm NO.

I am not talking about beating them or rubbing their nose in it. Just some dfirm discipline like their mother would do.

No hate mail please.

Also reconfining might be necessary. I also put their bed or toybox over the spot, to discourage them from going back to it.

Yep definately confine him. If he is having many accidents he is not ready for freedom. 9 months sounds a little old to be having many accidents. Some are to be expected when he can't hold it - but he should know where the doggie toilet is by now and at least be trying. Are you making it clear? You say you are using pads and letting him go outside? Try keeping him tethered to you in the house so when he starts to squat you can say NO OUTSIDE or whatever and immediately pick him up and take him there, then praise him. I don't believe shaking or scolding is the way to go - with certain dog personalities you can end up teaching them it's not OK to go in front of you. A NO or a shake can to startle is good and then place him in the right spot. Continue rewarding with tasty treats when he gets it right.

Also are you crate training at all? if you were I would say take him for a walk and if he doesn't go - crate him for 20 mins at a time until he goes. Try to get him in the right spot at the time you think he needs to go.

Anopther suggestion, is to feed him at the same times everyday, and then take him out immediately afterwards.

We have a pretty consistent routine in terms of feeding. I've been taking him out first thing in the morning before I hit the gym. Up until last week, he was doing great and pooping outside most of the time. This week is another story.

I work from home so I don't crate him at all. I've started confining him when I leave for the gym, if he didn't poop outside. He almost always poops in the morning and then again sometime between 4-6 or so.

He is great with peeing on the pads, but just not poops. It's like he wants to do those somewhere else. I don't really like the idea of putting pads in the diningroom - afraid he'll choose to start peeing there too.

Try walking him longer. Loki always poops on a walk even if he has just gone in the yard. We always walk the same way - to the park where there is a garbage can! And he always poops along the way somewhere. If I just take him out in the yard he may not go, but if we go on a walk he always goes I always bring home a very tired empty dog!

I agree with Jeaniek, A tiny little finger swat on the behind works. But make sure you love your baby after a few seconds. I have tried other ways this seems to work the best, A TINY LITTLE FINGER SWAT ONLY

Well I'm happy to say things have improved tremendously!! Jaxon has more of a routine down and has been consistently going outside first thing in the morning (pees and poops). He's been hitting the paper 100% for pees when inside, and I'm started to figure out when he's 'asking' to go out. It's very subtle but I'd rather take him out more often so he gets it right.

I confined him for a couple of days last week - he really didn't like it. If I left, he'd crash his food dish so the water would spill out and the crunchies went everywhere. Now that he's back on track, I'm not confining anymore. As long as he gets it right, he gets freedom.

Hopefully another week and we'll be perfect!
