the first day i got toby i went to my mothers house with him..... My mom, dad, brother, his fiance, my aunt, uncle, and cousin were over at the house that day and he had A LOT of socialization that day (and my moms dogs).... You are protective with good reason, i honestly HATED the fact that my cousin would always make a grab for the puppy everytime he walked by, but he wouldnt be in any room if i wasnt there too.... i think HE was more protective and concerend about his welfare then I was.... i think first and foremost you have to have trust and "rules" for the pup that EVERYONE must folow (this is what i did) and if they violated them then they could not hold the pup anymore... when toby had all his shots i took him to the dog park, which was less than a good experience, but he got to socialize with other dogs (he didnt think he was a dog..... the whoel time at the park he was like "mom get me out of here there are DOGS here ") Know youre babies limits as far as exitement (and their reactions to other people) toby REALLY didnt like the people at my fiance's work so those were people i was concerned with toby being around

Default My experience

Hi...
I'm new here, but I can totally understand where you are coming from.
Me and my parents went through some very tragic experiences with 3 yorkies over a course of about 2 years all resulting in their deaths. It made us all very paranoid about everything and everywhere our little ones went. It took awhile, but overtime I realized that the amount of paranoia we all had was completely irrational and unhealthy. So me, I tried my best to get rid of what I could. To learn to let my little guy be as curious as he could be within a reasonable realm. It wasn't easy but I did It. Just like me, my parent's both got their own yorkies after the experience's we all went through. My dad first, followed by my mom, then me. As it finally would seem god had decided that we now had the right dogs, It was now up to us to decide how to treat them. Oh we all treated them wonderful yes, but my parents had yet to put the fear and paranoia away as much as I had. Now Its not something I'm asking to hide, get rid of, or lock away! Maybe its that they could of more or less toned it down in their actions.
I now watch all our yorkies when they interact. In Shooter, Gunter, and Panzer I can see the differences in how each one was raised and treated. Shooter is my father's yorkie and weighs in at about 6lbs he's the bigest and sturdiest of the three and is the most protected purely of my father's fear. While Gunter 5lbs and Panzer 4lbs will be out playing Shooter may be brought in by my father if he senses the slightest rock out of place. But I do not doubt his good intentions. Gunter is the most defensive and offensive he does not cope well without my mother or around strangers. He has had very little social interaction and has become an armpit piranha. Panzer well I'm just afraid he's to friendly and will say the wrong thing to the wrong dog or stick his tongue up the wrong nose. I travel all over the state with him just to bring him to see other animals and people and he is currently in the last stages of becoming a therapy dog.
Now I know my little guy only weighs 4 pounds and could get carried away by a hawk, stolen off my front lawn, stepped on or dropped. There are so many possibilities as to what could happen to him if I thought about it all the time well I don't think he would much enjoy my company or I his. So I've just learned to let what I can go and enjoy my life with one hell of a dog.

WOW - good luck with all this. I personally know it's so different when the fur babies are soooo tiny.

Just keep close tabs, don't allow others to hold, but to only pet etc...Watch the kiddies, and if many people are over kennel the little one so nobody steps on her.

Now that Schatzie is a Porkie Yorkie I am not so over protected. But soon a tiny "tea cup" (just kidding, just wanted to get the hair raised on everyone's neck) will be living in our home and things will be way differant here and away.

But socialization is important no matter what the size, just be careful for accidents I guess would be the biggy, and even with Schatzie being big NOBODY is allowed to hold her as I am afraid she will be dropped.

Well I would definately get as many people around the pup as you feel comfortable and maybe you could make a no holding rule. You could tell people that "he/she doesn't like being held and will jump out of your hand, so we just prefer you sit on the floor and pet him/her". I do think socialization is very important though, but I do have three big dogs and you probably should be a little more concerned with big dogs than little, not to mention one of our big dogs have a bit of a anger management issue so I'm very picky about socializtion.

PZGunstar- I enjoyed your story very much. I think you have a very healthy outllok on raising your dog. I learned from your post.

The "no holding" rule suggested by Schatzie and Hickey007 is a good one too.

The fear of having an aggressive/timid yorkie is what allows me to not be paranoid. Bailey goes everywhere he can with me and meets everyone he can. We had a chihuahua who wasn't properly socialized when she was a puppy and she was very aggressive towards anyone & everyone, almost bit my next door neighbor. I didn't want to repeat that experience again

Puppies need to be socialized just as children do.

Default It's the tiny thing's that count

I think as hard as you try it's really hard, maybe not even possible to not find a small dog that has at least one small overprotection issue. It's in the way they look at you and sleep with you. These little guy's know the intimate teeny tiny details of our lives.
Panzer is my little guard dog he sit's on my bed and barks at anything that walks by my room. While I sleep, he wont dare wake me up by licking me he will only sit and stare at me activating the "sleepless young child instinct" waking me up. If I'm packing a suitcase, and he knows what that is. He will climb up into or unto it and sit in the dead center and stare at me shaking. Same thing with shoes and cloths, I'm a bare footer he knows if a shoe goes on mommy, mommy goes out that door.
In the morning for my parents, their yorkies freak out as soon as my dad puts his cologne on. Shooter hides and Gunter runs around like a maniac waiting for cheese and attack all the others when it comes to be first.
