Animal Smiley 036 Newbie to the forum - need advice please

Hi! I’m a newbie to this forum, but not a newbie to owning a Yorkie. Pebbles just turned 2 years old on March 18, 2005 & I just brought my newest baby Skittles home. Skittles will be 8 weeks this Friday (April 22). She’s been home for almost a week now is doing pretty well. The 1st two nights she slept very well in a big crate w/Pebbles. The 3rd night however, she cried & cried. I finally remembered how I dealt w/Pebbles (though she was 10 wks when I brought her home). I took my shirt off & put it in the crate w/them - worked like a charm. Also, getting both of them out & taking them outside to wee helped too. Right now, Skittles is getting up every 2-3 hours & whining - my husband & I take turns getting up to let them out to do business. Things are going great again (keep your fingers crossed!).

Anyway, I want to be sure that Pebbles doesn’t get too jealous of the baby, so we’re trying to give them equal amounts of attention - hard to do. I gave Pebbles soooo much attention when she was a baby & I’m afraid that if I don’t do the same w/Skittles, she will have a stand-offish disposition. But whenever any us (I have a 15 yr. old son too) reach down to give Skittles attention, Pebbles comes running over & tries to butt in. I end up using both hands - one to pet Pebbles & one to pet Skittles. My problem is that I don’t know if I’ve giving Skittles (and Pebbles for that matter) enough attention. Any help from you pro’s would be great! I’ll try to post pics of my babies this weekend.

Thanks,
Kim

Maybe while someone else is home, take one at a time in another room and spend some one on one time with them. Then switch and do the other, this will let them know that THEY are the #1, and they will both feel this way?!
I only have one dog and have thought about another, and have worried abt this also,, but have read up on it, and they suggested alone time with the owner. Let me know how it all works for ya..

Animal Smiley 036 Thanks rrosenberry!

I will try that after dinner tonight - I'm at work right now & they stay in "their room" while we're at work & school during the day. I put on classical music for them, a pee pad down for potty time, and both have their own cozy beds & toys to play with. Oh yeah, I also put one a shirt that I've worn in each of their beds to comfort them.

Thanks for the advice!

I saw a segment on Animal Planet one day about the original dog being aggressive when a new dog was brought into a house. So I've used some of that advice when dealing with my two babies. I have a 7 1/2 month old male, Hercules, and a new 3 month old female, Athena. Hercules has never been aggressive toward her at all, but I decided to use some of these techniques just to be on the safe side and make sure he does not get aggressive.

Give Pebbles attention first. This is her privilege for being the older one. Pet her first and then pet Skittles. I'm not saying ignore Skittles, but acknowledge Pebbles first. Also, try to feed Pebbles first. This was harder for me b/c they both just kinda start and they gravitate towards the same bowl sometimes.

Also, maybe give Pebbles treats first. Just do things that make her feel like she's still special getting special attention. That way she won't get upset or jealous when you give Skittles special attention.

Good luck!

Animal Smiley 019 Great advice so far

Thanks for more great advice. I've been trying to give Pebbles some extra attention when the baby is asleep or playing & not paying much attention to what's going on.

Things are getting better every dat though. I've wanted a 2nd Yorkie for a long time, and when the breeder who sold Pebbles to me let me know that she was getting ready to have more pups, I decided it was time (well, I talked to my husband first..). He's having as much fun as I am!

Thanks again!
