Confused how long did training take?

I'm a bit frustrated as Cooper is nearly 4 months old and is still not potty trained.. I don't know what I'm doing wrong!! He pees like 25 times a day.. is he just not grown enough? He hits the pad, but he still goes in his cage and doesn't seem to like going outside (and doesn't tell us when he has to go... but we take him out often).... What age should a yorkie be trained? My mother's friend had her dog trained in 2 weeks!

We have been accident free for 2 weeks now! Wooo hoooo! Timmy will be 4 months on the 27th and Mimi 3 months on the 26th. I am consistant with both of them and alot of praise and treats work wonders as well. They both use the pads. When we first brought Mimi home she would pee in her crate so I decided to set my alarm for every 2 hours so I could get up and she could go potty. (I still do it) Timmy sleeps all night now so when I get up for work in the morning I let him out and he goes potty. Yesterday they were home alone for the first time and all day I was thinking about the mess I was going to find when I got home, but my babies proved me wrong! Not one mistake!

Hang in there, your baby will get there too. It just takes a little time.

We got Millie at 12 wks old and she was not reliably house broken until about 6-7months old. Yorkies are harder to train and take longer. They also require your intense participation in the potty training process. In other words you absolutely must be actively involved in the potty training and that means never keeping your eye off the puppy unless they are confined in a crate or x-pen or tied to you on a leash. They must be on a potty schedule that you keep for them and lead them to the potty area and you must be present during the potty episode. You cannot let them out into the yard for them to go by themselves.

Also they will learn to go potty in the designated area, way before they will learn to tell you they have to go. So until they learn to tell you they have to go and hold it until you let them out, then you cannot let up one bit on the potty training.

It is so much work, fustrating and exhausting, but in the end you have a fully house broken pet and for a "short" period of time (and in the whole scheme of things, it is a short period) you may be inconvenienced, but you will have the rest of it's life to enjoy a happy healthy relationship unmarred by ongoing potty issues.

I guess it all depends on the pup because i got my pup at 9 weeks old and the first couple of days he didnt pee on the wee wee pad but then i bought him the arm and hammer wee wee pads and wala he would only go on the wee wee pads. My mom works for a doctors office and gave me some blue pads which are used in some doctors offices and hospitals they are basically the same as wee wee pads the only thing it does not have the arm and hammer in it and nor does is soak in the pee but he uses it and it saves me money as well.

we have had Rocky 1 month and 1 week (feels like i have had him longer) and he is totally potty trained.

July first he get's his last shot and i will be able to walk him outside let's see how that goes.

Napoleon is 6months and hasn't had an accident for over a week. He is getting better and better. My advice during the training course is to keep a SHARP eye on him, never let him out of your sight, keep him confined when you can't watch him, be very consistent with when you take him to pee/poop. And lastly, be patient. If he doesn't poop/pee where you want him to, it's because he doesn't understand your wishes. I think these little guys really DO want to please you but they just don't understand yet.

Loki used to go as often as every 10 mins for months! He is 1 1/2 now and he still goes out at least once an hour, whereas some people say their dogs only go out 3-4 times a day. He's had some medical issues that are under control, but I can't fault him even if he has to go outside every 30 mins - he always lets me know he needs to go out so who am I to complain?

It can be SO frustrating to housetrain - and from what I have read here everyone's little ones are so different. I trained Otis to use a bell, but after him ringing it to go outside every 5 minutes I gave in and bought a doggie door. It has changed my life ! I live in a townhouse with no yard so he goes in a litterbox lined with a puppy pad that is on the balcony... it took him about 10 months to be 100% house trained. Keep it up - you will find a schedule that fits your dog !
