Do any of you have a bell that your little ones use to let you know they need to go out? I'm curious to see if this works and how to train them to use it. Thanks.

I tried it for a while as was suggested here. It didn't work. They hit it all the time and not for going outside. They would use it just to get outside to play anyway. I think they just accidently hit it most of the time.

Sophie uses a bell to go out but she was already housetrained when we started using it. She would go to the door and sit and sometimes she would have accidents because we would be in another room so she would pee in front of the door. I had read about the bell and decided to try it. Every time she would go to the door I would make her nudge the bell with her nose and get really excited and take her out. ( LOL she just rang the bell as I was typing this) Anyway eventually she started to ringing it on her own. When we first started every time she rang the bell we took her out no matter how often it was. Even if she didn't really want to go out we made her to let her know that when that bell rings it means outside. Now that she has been using it for awhile and knows what it means I sometimes won't let her go if I know she has already went potty and is just wanting to spy on the neighbors. They are very smart and will deffinetly figure out how to use it to their advantage but she would sit in front of the door to spy too so not much difference. Now I know when she has to go if I am in another room. It works great for us. I hope it works for you.

Thanks... I'm definitely going to try it. My boyfriend laughed at me when I told him I was going to try and train them to use a bell. He said it couldn't be done. I hope it works.

Joey rings a bell when he needs to go out. I've used this method with several dogs now. I don't do anything to train them to use it, though. I just hang it from the doorknob of the door that they go out. It rings naturally everytime the door opens and closes and it has never taken my dogs long to figure out that bell ringing = going outside.

You have to be prepared to RUN open the door everytime that they ring it at first. They need to know that there is a very predictable correlation between their ringing the bell and you're opening the door.

Do they ring it when they just want to go out and play? Sure. But, I don't have a problem with it.
