Animal Smiley 019 Pool vs yorkie training

I have had lili for a few months now and I have not given her the proper house training and we are now having a pool put in. So, the doggie door is not an option for Bailey or Lili, so now my house smells like pee and poop... I need to train Lili but I'm so busy w/ work and the kids it has been hard...now with the pool it is ever more difficult! Does anyone have any suggestions...I have read someone talk about house training outside...but I'm afraid b/c our fence is down. Help...I know this is a problem well posted but I would still like to hear out other success stories.

I understand your problem. Mine is similar because I work and am not home part of the time.

But - remember (with or without a pool), a lot of us can't let our little dogs outside unless we take them out on a leash. So, you're really in the same boat that most of us are in.

I know with my little pup - now that he's gotten older (8 months), he pees less frequently, there isn't as much of a problem as there used to be. I often leave him confined in the kitchen for 6 hours or so, and he doesn't pee at all. But, once out of the kitchen, he'll pee wherever he wants. I have him wearing a belly band when he has free run of the house. This doesn't stop him from peeing, but it does stop him from doing any damage. (But, again, he isn't peeing as often as he used to).

When I'm home and being a good girl, if I take him out every hour and a half or two hours, he almost never pees in the house. But, this is because I'm trained, not because he's trained.....right?

I think my taking my pup outside oftener - letting him pee outside and telling him how wonderful he is ---- along with continuing to tell him how wonderful he is not being when he pees in the house is going to have to be the method that will work best for us. Doing this consistently (which is my problem) - and having patience and letting him get older is probably going to be the best solution for us.

Good luck! If there was an easy answer - there wouldn't be a zillion posts on YorkieTalk about potty training problems.

My wee girl is now over 5 months old and we have been outside training her from the start. She is now about 80% reliable, but a lot depends on the watchfulness of the person at home with her-she is 99% reliable for me. I take her into the yard after sleeps and every hour otherwise. She will run in and out herself if the deck door is open and will scratch at the door to get out. I tell her to "Go toilet" when I take her out and praise, praise, praise! When I am not at home she is in her ex-pen in the kitchen and never wets that. She can be in that for about 5 hours while I am at work. She sleeps with me and has never wet the bed but runs up and down on it if she needs out. So we are nearly there with potty training. I am going to steam clean the carpets next week to get rid of the scent of little accidents.
You will need a fenced area for her if you want to outside train. Can you put up a temporary fence? Your pool will need to be safety fenced for your children anyway in the end, I assume? Good luck.

To add to my earlier reply, there is a thread on today about using an ex-pen outside.Maybe that could be a temporary solution for you while your pool is being put in?

We also have a pool and non-fenced yard. Zoey is now five months old and is fine outside. She know her boundries. She is only allowed in the back and we have a pretty large back yark with lots of grass and she knows to stay on the grass or patio. From the very beginning, I would let her out and stand on the outskirts and everytime she would get off the grass, I would clap my hands and say No No, enough to scare her back to the grass. Every once in awhile she wanders just a little but watches me to see if I see her. She knows! I don't ever just leave her out there by herself, but if I'm working in the yard or whatever, she roams. I have also taught her that when our front or side door opens, she is free to go through it, however, she cannot go off the step. I strickly enforce that. Now, the kids can be in the front playing and the door will be open, and there is Zoey sitting on the top step watching. She has been a quick learner when it comes to boundries. We'll see what happens with the pool - she never pays any attention to it. Our large dogs drink out of it and she just watches them. Since our yard isn't fenced, I would never leave her out there anyway . We do have an auto pool cover but have left it open all winter. Hope some of this long post helps......Good LUck

We live in a townhome and we are not allowed to have a fence. I don't understand the problem? Loki goes out on a leash... we have a 26 foot flexi leash (retractable) and he goes out to the yard while I stand on the porch (or huddle inside the door when it's cold) and he does his thing and comes right back. Since you live in Florida, you don't even have to deal with the cold. All of our neighbors have dogs and this is how all of us do it, either using flexis, tie outs (for the bigger dogs and they don't stay out more than a few minutes) or they just walk their dogs on a regular leash. We spend a lot of time outside talking to our neighbors while our dogs sniff around in the yard, it's great!
