Weird Potty Pattern - YorkieTalk.com Forums

We just got our new 4 month old Yorkie late yesterday afternoon. We have potty pads (Arm & Hammer Puppy Housebreaking Pads to be exact) laid down in the kitchen for him to do his business. The weird thing is, out of the 20 odd times he's pottied he used the pads only 7 or 8 times and only one of those times were for poop. All of the other times he has pottied on the carpet all around the apartment, no one special place.

I'm assuming 7 or 8 out of 20 something is not that bad, but how can we get him to always potty on the pads and not the carpet???

You have a male???Is he altared???This was what Neo did when we moved into a new house.He started peeing every freaken where.Also marking the walls/corners.I think that he could smell another dog that had lived there before and was marking.Just a thought.Maybe more members have some answersfor you but that was what i had to go through.

you *just* got him and he's still young. he needs to be trained on where the potty pad is, and where it's okay to go potty in the home. i suggest confining him to a smaller space and not let him have the run of the house unless you can watch him like a hawk to potty train.

when i first got my puppy, i had him confined to the tiles in the kitchen and he'd just pee where ever he wanted on the tiles. i layed down a bunch of potty pads and praised him and gave him lots of treats when he eliminated in the right place. nowadays he'll walk to the potty pad on his own to pee or poo. he's good about it at home, but at other people's homes, he's not as reliable. not because he's not trained, but because it's a strange place and he has no idea where the potty pad is. and when he's gotta go, he's gotta go.

btw, you need to clean his accidents really well, with an enzyme cleaner, otherwise, he'll pick up the scent next time and think it's okay to go there too.

When we brought our puppies home, they each went on the wee wee pads at first, then had many accidents. We would praise them lavishly for going on the pads, and ignore the 'mistakes'. This worked over time, since they were very eager to please and loved the praise. Once they got older, we would gently scold them for messing on the floor, but still carry on the praise. They are now 1 and 2 yrs old, and both haven't had an accident in a long time. They are males and were both neutered at 6 mos. (This helped a lot). Patience and consistency always works best. What's a enzyme cleaner? Is that equivalent to that water and vinegar solution I heard about? We have a oxy-strength pet odor & stain eliminator with Arm & Hammer deodorizers, is that okay to use?

We thought about confining him to the kitchen too. If he eventually learns to potty only on the pads, is it then okay to allow him to run free about the apartment (and carpet)???

A pet odor cleanser like Nature's Miracle. it's not enough to have it clean to our sight and smell. our puppies have better sense of smell than we do.

I had bunjee confined to the kitchen for the first couple weeks, then gradually expanded his area of freedom. he wasn't allowed on carpet until 10 weeks after i've gotten him (he was 18 weeks old at the time). nowadays, (he's 22 weeks now) he's free to roam about the condo himself if i'm home. he's fenced off and limited to the tiled areas only when he's by himself.

sometimes we'd play in the living room area and he'll all of a sudden run off into the kitchen (where his pad is) and then a minute later, run back to continue playing. and sure enough, when i check the potty pad, there's a stain.

I just got my puppy a week ago and she's 9 weeks right now. Just from this past week, she's been doing pretty well with her potty training. I read and heard that even though they seem to know where to potty, there will be accidents every now and then until they are 1yr. I used to lay out the pads in my kitchen, but for some reason she never liked to go potty there. So I put the pads out by the door and started the training over again with the praising and she caught on real quick. Even when I went over to my friend's house, i layed out the pad and she actually went to go pee on it! When I do catch her in the act of pottying in the wrong area, I make a loud noise to startle her and carry her to the pad and try to get her to finish there. If she does, then I praise her. I thought hey since she knows where to go I can take a break from watching her, but NO WAYS! it really takes time and patience. What they remember today, they probably won't remember tomorrow until reminded. As for the cleaner, I use Simple Solution Stain and Odor Remover. It works great for me.
