Ok, I picked SugarDaddy up Sunday. My husband and I had already agreed, due to the extremely cold weather, it would be best to paper or litter box train him. So, I went to the store and got all the necessary supplies. Unfortunately, the breeders had been having them sleep on the pads. Now he RARELY uses the pads cause he thinks that's where he sleeps. Sometimes he'll lay down there instead of his bed to play with a chew toy or just to relax. I've started picking him up when I notice it and placing him and his toy in his bed... i don't know, maybe that will help him differentiate between the two places. Anyhow, I don't know what to do. He pees EVERYWHERE, and usually it's like 2 seconds after I take him to the pad and try for a few minutes to get him to go. I was wondering if it might work better to change the pads to either unscented ones (the pads I bought were scented with some stuff to attract the puppy and make this process easier

) or possibly purchase some doggy litter and try it that way. I'm thinking perhaps if I just switch it up a little bit... but I honestly don't know. I tried the diaper, but HE HATES IT! It takes me a couple minutes to russle him into it, and he has it ripped of in a matter of seconds. It's kinda discouraging.

Let me know if you have any ideas. He's only about 9 weeks old now, and weighs in at a wopping 1 lb 5 oz with his collar, HUGE toggy tag, and his fleece jacket. Just adorable little guy! Do they make the belly bands small enough to fit him??? Oh, the diaper I bought is FourPaws. Are there any softer cloth like diapers that he might like better??? Or might be more comfortable for his teeny tiny hind end???

From my understanding, I might be wrong but I thought that the diapers were to keep them from going in the house. And that they dont go in the diapers but you keep it on them and then when you take them outside you take it off and they go to the bathroom out there. Now dont hold me to this bc I could be wrong but maybe someone else can help me out here.

I would try belly bands instead of the diaper. There are a lot of folks on here that make and sell clothing and can custom fit your little one.
Also, keep him confined when he can't be supervised. As young and tiny as he is, he has very little bladder control and will need to learn that the pads are for peeing/poing and not sleeping. X-pens work great. Hopefully, some of the other members with more advice will write in. Good luck.

Is this your first puppy? At 9 weeks old, you are expecting to much from him, very young (pee often). Plus, he just arrived Sunday and needs adjustment time to his new home. Are you giving him total freedom? I would restrict his freedom, use an an X-pen or kitchen with a puppy gate. Some members crate train their pups. I have done this with some, depends on the puppy. I did housebreak a male puppy with panties with a panty shield liner inside but he was much older and used the wee pads at the same time when I removed the panty. I only did this because it was winter and very cold. He had pneumonia and was fragile. You can find them in many catalogs. I watch a puppy and put it on paper when it awakes and after feeding, lots of praise,etc. He would walk away from the paper but I'd put him back on it and so forth. I followed the same schedule with paper training as I would with training outside. They eventually get it but at 9 weeks their bladders can't hold it. It takes time, patience, and being consistant to housebreak a puppy. There are belly bands in all sizes. You can also find some made to order. One of my breeder's made her own belly bands and sent them in the puppy pac.
At 9 weeks and only having him a few days, too early to call it a 'nightmare!'

My first suggestion would be to keep the pee pad in a different area. And take him to the pee pad in the intervals necessary for a puppy. I would take him to the pee pad area, upon awaking, immediately after 1/2 hour of play, 10 - 15 minutes after eating and drinking. (what you are doing is exactly what you would do if training to go outside). You are physically taking them to another area, away from their playing and sleeping area. Puppies need to go potty and re-enforced to go potty in the right place, every hour on the hour!

Keep your puppy confined. Either small xpen or crate. Keep him in the x-pen or crate, after successfully going potty and when you cannot be on the floor with the puppy, watching every move. As soon as you take him out of the x-pen or crate, back to the pee pad area.

Do NOT remove puppy from pee area until they have completed their business. This may take anywhere from 15 - 30 minutes. The sooner the puppy realizes that it gets to play or go about it's business after it poos and/or pees, then he will begin to connect that he goes potty when placed there and it will go much faster (but this could take several weeks to accomplish, so you can never give up).

don't forget to treat, praise and party when he does go successfully in the correct place. but also remember, he is 9 wks old and will not get it overnight (it could be months before he gets it and you want to make sure you are very consistent, even when you are tired) if he has an accident it's your fault, not his!
